Games ruined by stupid crap?

What are your exemples of games that got waaay worse because of little, but super anoying, things?

* GTA 4. I never played 3, but the lack of checkpoints made me rage quit the game. One tiny misstake or plain bad luck and you have to restart at jail/hospitale, drive to where you get the mission, drive to the mission, replay the mission in as a non risk taking boring way possible, just to miss that jump on the bike or whatever and do everything again. So freaking stupid.

* Plague tale - requiem. Super anyong jerky camera which made me nauseous along with super frustrating stealth segments. Often it was like no matter what I did I got spotted, took away alot of the fun with the game. Amazing presentation though.

* Control. Beatiful game. The feel of the gunplay and the telekineses powers are freaking awesome, but that freaking map... I spent so much time trying to figure out were I was meant to go I quit it the first time. Combined with the lack of checkpoints made it way to frustrating. Not really that fun to be able to be more or less one-hit killed by rocket launchers in chaotic, frentic firefights just to have to try to find your way to the mission again.

* Horizon forbidden west. Nothing big that ruins everything, but a bunch of a bit anoying things the game would have been better without. Aloy being too slow when climbing up a ledge, too many freaking variations of every weapon, Aloy being knocked down and taking too long to get up, too much busywork upgrading weapons etc. And why have health potions, cure different effects potions, smoke bombs, call mount, smoke bomb etc on the same button. How are you supposed to scroll all the way to cure corruption potion in the middle of a frentic fight when you cant pause the game when doing so?

Destiny 2 with deleting the intro missions, and having way too many currencies and items, complete with sub item inside sub item with its own submenu

JRPGs are notorious for stuff like this. Unskippable cutscenes where it's just cutting from one character to another and they go "huh", "wow", "no way", "uh", "what" etc. Trails games are coming to mind but most of the time you can fast forward or skip stuff like that. Fast forwarding is the best quality of life feature in games. Any game that has repetitive actions should have the ability to fast forward.

Multiple games - Weapon Degradation it was awful in System Shock 2 and every other game that tried it. A gun should last a lifetime if it's looked after what's with all this weapon breaking after 30 shots nonsense

Weapon degredation is the worst feature ever in games. Found a weapon you like? Better not use it or it will break.

Non rebindable keys, why?
Just Cause 3 you can rebind the keys apart from the letter "E" which is hard coded to the vehicle horn
Battlefield 3 If you rebind the jump key you cant complete the game

Games that think you're stupid and hand hold you the entire time. I don't need the solution to a puzzle every 5 seconds, let me figure out stuff on my own, Sony devs.

Bad UI. Dragon's Dogma 2 (incredible game) is hurt so much by this. Inexcusable experience for mouse users. Clearly they just took the controller GUI and made it so you can click the options with the cursor.

Yeah, I hate that stuff.

It adds a sense of realism, even if it is annoying. For example, a wooden bat is tough, but it would eventually splinter with repeated use. So then you'll find it becomes kind of useless.

I guess the games that have features like this, basically want you to learn a pattern of what's effective. The same applies to many types of ammo. You cannot get greedy or clumsy in a lot of cases. Space for banking your material is limited, but then some forms of ammo may be rarer than others. This is why you must be careful, so it isn't going to be used hastily.

I dont so mind checkpoints as long as the game creates checkpoints at regular intervals even better if the game also allows manual saves
the game Singularity (great underrated game imho) only allows a single checkpoint and no manual saves so if you wish to replay a level your only options is to replay the entire game again
one thing I did is at the start of every level is alt tab out copy the checkpoint file and copy it in a numbered folder along with a description that way I can reply any level I want by just replacing the checkpoint file with
the one I want

I´m guessing checkpoints must be a difficult thing to balance right. Halo CE had checkpoints after each battle. I remember finding that fun for the most part, it kept things exciting. Later games removed some of that with dynamic checkpoint saving during battles. Depending on how tight the actual gameplay that can be a good or a bad thing. Getting one hit killed by floods with rocket launcher with huge splashdamage was only frustrating. I found some battles in control too long with luck being too much of a factor as well.

QTEs. I used to just hate them for being annoying but now that I'm older and am having neuropathy issues they can be an absolute game breaker for me. Really grateful they're adding options to bypass QTEs and button smashing events to games lately. It turns them from unplayable to enjoyable for me.

Add to that button mashing for me. Can't stand mechanics that required you to spam a button as fast as possible. Just not fun.

Never been a fan of it but the difference between it being annoying and impossible is an unpassable wall for me now. I've had my son get me through a few of them on games I want to play and it makes me proud and annoys the hell out of me to see the way his hands just do a beautiful ballet on the keyboard.

Button mashing goes to the younger player 90% of the time. If the age gap is 10 years or more there's absolutely no chance for the geezer. We have to overcome it with wisdom and experience 🧓
