Predict: Next gen console tech (9th iteration and 10th iteration edition) [2014 - 2017]

Data transfer rate per chip, independent of final bus width.

A 256-bit bus, ala 4Pro @ 6.8GT/s, gives you ~218GB/s. If you replaced that with GDDR6 @ >11GT/s, you'd have at least 352GB/s on the same bus size.

A 384-bit bus, ala Scorpio @6.8GT/s, gives you ~326GB/s. If you replaced that with GDDR6 @ >11GT/s, you'd have at least 528GB/s on the same bus size.

bus width (bits) / 8 bits per byte * GT/s
Micron announced 16GT/s which would give 768GB/s with a 384-bit bus. That could be just enough for next gen.

I'd wonder about the power consumption & cost at the highest tier, but we're years away from products.

There's been some overly optimistic memory clocks annoucements in the last few years. HBM2 was announced at 2gbps for launch, the only products are 1.6 and 1.8, and the higher speeds disappeared from databooks. Even DDR4 was announced at "up to 4266" while the highest validated speed is still 3200 today (at a much higher cost than 2666). Speed grade increases are not happening fast.

But... I think GDDR tech have been an overachiever so far. Hynix is currently offering 10gbps plain gddr5 which really surprised me. They consistently raised the speed at every new node. It's looking good for gddr6 continuing to get speed increases.

When ordering hundreds of millions of chips, they can't possibly skim the top of the production, so maybe it will be the same situation as the ps4.... They used 5.5gbps when the top bin was 7gbps. So if 16/18gbps is the fastest in 2019, it's not crazy to expect either 12 or 14.

Who! Where! Must have been the same people who said xb1s was going to be $99 and the size of an apple TV.

Nope. Here's what a quick search resulted in. Enjoy...

The first post references other people expecting it in 2018, over here: https://forum.beyond3d.com/posts/1984259/
On one hand, there are people expecting Sony to respond quickly to Scorpio by releasing PS5 in 2018, or saying absolutely no later than 2019.

This next post is from a former user (removed for obvious reasons) says PS5 could show up in 2018, over here https://forum.beyond3d.com/posts/1973254/
With Scorpio, nobody knows if PS5 will show up in Q3 2018 (10TF Zen+Vega) or years later.. I have been told Marky Cern is really busy these days, so.... who knows

And then the DigitalFoundry article was brought into the forum via this post: https://forum.beyond3d.com/posts/1980894/
DF has posted their "In theory" article about the possibility of PS5 arriving in 2018.

I find the whole article pointless, Sony would be insane to introduce their next base console so soon [and before 7nm transistors and 2GB GDDR6 chips arrive].

If it is late 2018/ early 2019 - 10nm?

It's always been this way, higher specs console gets people readjust their speculations for the competition to "react". This entire thread have started with mostly 2018 expectations for MS.

Here's something circa 2015.. Vintage... Late bottled post...
8 core amd apu . 2.5ghz to 3ghz range
for ms a 128meg sram on die.
2017 gpu
32 gigs of ram. Split 16 gigs HBM and 16 gigs DDR4
2TB SSD .

Launch in 2017 for MS.

The next generation will begin probably 2019 or 2020, all will depends of the availability of the volume 7nm process node and the memory technology GDDR6 or HBM3 at a resonnable cost. It will be like this generation an APU but this time much better CPU (Zen ISA and architecture based) and probably Navi based for the GPU between 8,4 to 12,5 Tflops/s with all Vega improvement and some Navi improvement too...

Vega had improvements?

:devilish:

Conservative rasterization, ROV and all Direct X 12 features, on Vega they all have the top tiers for this feature. Dual rate FP16 like on PS4 Pro, primitive shaders and DBSR....

Yeah, I was being sarcastic. It was a reference to all the fanboy complaints about the architecture you hear around the internet... i.e. the way you hear people moan, is as if Vega brought no improvements at all.

And it will be a nice thing for PC too. with more and more 3D engine using the feature... I hope it will be 2019... Last gen was too long...

EDIT: And I am not even sure Navi will have so many new features but it will maybe just be a Vega refinement with mostly a better performance per watts...

A little offtop. Did Xbox One or PS4 support shader model 6.0?
SM6.0 belong to DX, hard to report on PS4. Both Xboxes will support it. However, neither Xbox supports the few hardware required features of SM6: procedural textures etc.
