Something tells me it didn't sell all that well... I have a feeling that Shenmue III's not going to happen ;)

edit: Just did some more snooping around ebgames.com, the asps (average selling prices) of PS2 games seem to be MUCH more stable than Xbx or GC games. For example, MGS2:S for Xbox is already selling for $24 USD (as is Unreal Championship), whereas a "bargin bin" PS2 game, Tony Hawk 4, goes for $39 USD. As for GC, it seems virtually every sports game has been discounted to $14-$25 USD.

Interesting observations.. but Shenmue 2 for $9 is pretty sad, they should have atleast lied and put it in the 'Platinum' lineup :(

I'll buy it for $10 although I have spend quite a few bucks to import it for the Dreamcast.

And you are right about the prices, especially in Canada it's a mirracle to find a PS2 game for a price lower than $40 US.

When have sales ever been a criteria for Sega?

:?

That's not cool at all... how could it have sold as bad as that? Well, people'd better take advantage of this because Shenmue 2 is a great game.

I think the speculation that Sega is cursed could possibly be true....in not-so related news, the Army Men series from 3DO has just hit the 5 million units sold mark

I have a feeling you're right ;)

I heard recently that Yu Suzuki is ending the series and there won't be a 3rd installment.

i cant really decide whether that's a good or a bad thing... er...

London boy if you haven't played a shenmue game yet and u have the xbox pick this game up. IT will change your opinions on the game. Of course now you will be a bit jaded because of all the new games out. But the story is top notch and the graphics still hold well.

Yu Suzuki himself won't produce Shenmue III, but Shin Ishikawa will.

News from Sega's AM2 studio reports that series creator Yu Suzuki will relinquish producer duties on Shenmue 3 to colleague Shin Ishikawa

I played the demo version of Shenmue II and it made me fall asleep.

If I paid $9.99 for that game, I would consider myself ripped off. =(

Seriously, I have never been able to see what is so good about the whole "Shenmue" series. Both Shenmue I and II were utterly soporific in my experience.

In the way that Gran Turismo feeds a lust for cars, Shenmue services the desires of those with a fever for martial arts. Like an interactive combat encyclopedia, the game portrays over a dozen actual fighting styles, their arsenal of moves, and a study of their effectiveness and usage in battle within the framework of play. Basically, you develop your Virtua Fighter as you live out an epic Kung Fu flick, adventuring with a freedom to explore dynamically simulated settings.

The game is a great buy for $10 and that's real cheap. It's got a real good storyline and the ideas behind the game are great. It's real sad that the actual execution of some of the gameplay elements in Shenmue are horrible. The series might be continued, but not in Yu Suzuki's original intentions for the game. He just doesn't want to continue with the game because it transformed into something he never wanted it to. I would pick up the game for $10, but that doesn't mean it would really ever get beaten. It's a slow paced game that really can't compare to RPG's in the traditional sense. I'd even say Final Fantasy VII is a better game, but I loved FF7.

Just about everything, even the fighting system is very slow paced.

Compared to a final fantsy game ? You have got to be kidding me . But it is your opinion and i will respect it.

Maybe I should clarify, I wasn't comparing it being slow paced to a Final Fantasy game. I was making that comparison in general. It's the type of game you play for the amazing story. But still, I did find FF7 to be far more enjoyable from a gameplay standpoint and storyline standpoint since it is more of a game that I prefer. When I originally played Shenmue I thought it was neat and highly innovative, but it grew tiresome to me after doing many of the same things all the time. It's just not my type of game, but still a great buy and a very good story is in there. It's not a game for everyone, but a great game to have in a collection. It is a true work of art, but like a piece of art, not everyone will find it to be of their liking.

The fights play out with a mechanical timing similar to the Virtua Fighter series. There are several fights, and they last for several minutes. It doesn't face the kind of monotony in battling that FF7 does.

The adventuring aspect in Shenmue has a leg up, too - you can progress with a minimum of investigation and exploration since all NPCs are given identity and purpose for you to use to your advantage. Instead of the traditional RPG convention of talking with every NPC in town, Ryo can identify who's who and only talk with characters that might be able to help with specific subjects. It cuts down on a lot of conversations to simply pay a visit to the head of the Neighborhood Association for information on a particular business instead of recycling through many of the townfolk for your needed clue.

The Shenmue games don't require you to wait around for many appointments or participate very much in the job system, either. You are only forced to work a few times at most for storyline reasons and to make a small amount of necessary cash... beyond that, your participation in various jobs/events is optional.
