Amid Microsoft's announcement of quarterly results today for the three months ending September 30 was some positive news for its Xbox business, which has perennially drawn flak as a drain on the software giant's balance sheet. This past quarter, revenues from the Xbox increased by $53 million compared to last quarter, a 20% jump.
While the increased volume of hardware and software sales could have raised revenue as high as $85 million, price cuts around the market offset that figure by $32 million.
Microsoft's entire Home and Entertainment segment, which includes the Xbox, PC games, the WebTV platform, and other home electronics products, brought in revenue of $581 million, also a 20% increase on the same quarter last year.
Costs in the Home and Entertainment segment increased 27%, however, despite a drop in the cost of manufacturing the Xbox, so it's hard to judge from the released figures whether the Xbox business is emerging from the red. Microsoft did not release net income figures for its individual divisions, although the company as a whole brought in a net income of $2.61 billion for the quarter.
