GameSpot Gears of War Multiplayer impressions

....snip...

pitted a squad of four COG soldiers against four Locust players in what was essentially a last-man-standing contest. Our games took place in a small urban map that included a handful of buildings to move through and a street littered with vehicular remains--giving us plenty of places to move in and out of cover. The A button performed its various functions with aplomb during our matches, and we found that we were not only able to move in and out of cover but also move between areas of cover while performing evasive rolls and such, all in one action. The games were fast-paced and there was plenty of blood spilled, but they definitely had a very tactical feel about them, and we found that we were most successful when we worked alongside squadmates, with one of us laying down a suppressing fire while the other moved around to flank the enemies in question.
The gameplay was fast-paced and intense
enough to the point that we completely forgot to check out the reloading mechanic that we were shown during the single-player presentation earlier. You only need to hit one button (the right shoulder) to reload your weapon, but when you do so, you'll notice that a small line moves across it that Microsoft compared to a swingometer in a golf game. The idea is that if you stop the line at exactly the right place by hitting the reload button again, you can reload your gun faster and, if you time your second press perfectly, you'll get a damage bonus on your next dozen or so rounds. Get the second button press horribly wrong, though, and you'll take longer to reload than you would normally, so it's a real risk-versus-reward situation.

Where is x360's next Gears of War? The should have shown off a brand new IP that people could look forward to for e3 07 - and no Halo3 does not fit that bill....

That reload bit sounds pretty interesting.

I saw it on G4, it was a very cool feature. I like the idea that you can not try it, and just reload at normal speed with normal damage. He called it a minigame within the game, which is pretty accurate.

Lost Planet

The visuals in the game, though not complete, are looking fantastic. The effects, especially those from explosions and weapons fire, are extremely impressive and put the game in the ranks of the best-looking 360 games we've seen. The environments are large and expansive and are complemented by the perpetual motion from wind and falling snow. The character models are detailed and animate smoothly. The vital suits are intricate showcases for the ornate design work done in the game. You'll see moving gears, flexing joints, and exhaust from your jump jets displayed in crystal clarity. However, the creepy Akrid are just as impressive thanks to odd fleshy bits that jut out at weird angles and a surprising amount of running lights that play out over their bodies. What's stood out so far is the amount of action happening onscreen at a generally smooth frame rate. The game manages to achieve a more-than-respectable amount of intensity thanks to the engine's steady performance and a near-overwhelming collection of foes.

Even though the demo was far from complete, the audio in Lost Planet is shaping up nicely and taking good advantage of the 360's sound hardware. What stand out the most at the moment are the weapons' fire and the ambient effects you'll hear. The weapons we heard in the demo showed off a nice range of audio, which complemented the insane explosions. The ambient effects, such as the wind and the background-critter effects from the Akrid, were good at setting a mood. We also heard some respectable voice acting, mainly the cries of the recently deceased, amidst the cacophony.

;) Yea I know what you mean

oh and Alan Wake.

BioShock

It doesn't hurt that the game looks gorgeous running on the Unreal Engine 3, which Irrational has heavily modified and is using to include water volumes, HDR-enabled specular highlights, realistically weighted bodies that float in standing water, and more. We actually saw the game running on the Xbox 360, which was running smoothly in high-def, and which looks like it will feature a console-oriented interface whereby actions like item collection are mapped directly to face buttons on the controller.

Thx for the list Tap-In, Bioshock sounds amazing.

I don;t see how you can fault MS for lack of new IP's, Crackdown, Alan Wake, Too Human, Mass Effect, Viva Pinata, Blue Dragon Lost Odyssey, Gears of War, Bioshock & Shadowrun for starters.
