Wii U hardware discussion and investigation *rename

I'm not sure if Android would replace console homebrew interests.... It seems more likely that nothing is happening because WiiU's library isn't getting people clamoring for the usual game backup loaders. Lets see what happens as the library gradually fills in with JRPGs and significant first party games.

1080p doesn't mean much; certainly not special sauce. There are 1080p games on PS360 too. The question is what level of graphics at 1080p?

E3 gameplay:

A 2.5D game, its not going to be as taxing at 1080p as something like and FPS.

It'll have cartoonish graphics with simple lighting and simpler (if any) shaders and marginal overdraw. Hardly a tour-de-force of graphics, although 1080P is better than no 1080P of course - that kind of goes without saying. :)

1080p60 (I assume 60 fps from Nintendo) will be nice on a big screen though. Lesser graphics for greater IQ and smoothness is a good. Just isn't a technical accomplishment in itself indicative of any hardware features.

The WiiU might have a special sauce, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will run at 1080p.

Special sauce? Like qhat kind of special sauce are we talking? Arby's? KC masterpeice?

Wouldnt its ability to output at a certain resolution Just have to do with its fillrate, ie how many rops it has, and how many post op effects it is/isnt filling pixels for? It seems I am in the minority here, but 720p is a fine image quality for me, especially on a tv while Im on the couch, I would much rather use the overhead for some nice lighting/layering.

As much as I dont want anything at all whatsoever to do with yet another platformer on the wii u (maybe Im alone, but I feel the wii u is more than saturated with a generously adequate selection of quality 2d platformers)

Id have to say Im far more interested in the fact Retro implemented an (im assuming proprietary) hair/physics animation for their monkey fur. At least for their little Kong Pow animations, the compression is so horrible on all feeds I cant even see the fur during standard gameplay.

720P on a large screen looks like shit. Seriously. It's a blurry mess, we're talking 1990s era graphics here; 1280*720. Any new console outputting graphics like that today should be embarrassed and ashamed, and so should the people who designed and marketed it be.

So you rate 900p to be much superior? Isn't most Xbox 360 and PS3 games that resolution? And what about Battlefield 4 on the new Xbox One?

Honestly I'd say 720p is fine, as long as the
games don't look like they're from 2 decades ago.

Nice strawman you got there, as I never suggested such a thing. But then again, PS360 is ancient now so they are excused. Anyway since you ask, PS3 games look pretty coarse on my 40" flatscreen - I have a tiny home so I sit less than 2m away.

Obviously depends on the size of the screen and the distance you look at it from...
1080 can be a waste if you're too far away (which isn't exactly difficult), of course if you did set everything to benefit from 1080 you'll notice (a not so big) difference when running 720.

EDIT
What he just said.

Oh Jebus what have I done.

Grall, thats 1990's era PC graphics. What did snes have... 256 or 512? Consoles have always been a bit behind there :p

Just to clarify, I was specifically referring to 720p on a tv while I am on my couch six to seven feet away. I would much rather have the extra resource overhead go to extra stuff on screen rather than an increase in resolution that Ill have to go put my glasses on just to notice, (and well, thats just not going to happen.... The glasses are probably sitting by my PC... and I am just to lazy to get up for something like that once Ive sat down with the intent of having a gaming session).

the screens are all native 720p based on the pixels. I don't know where Gamexplain got their information from...maybe the game will be updated to 1080p sometime in the future is what they were told?

All screenshots that NeoGAF user Globalisateur are not linked to Nintendo's official sites...

...Didn't Nintendo confirmed that Super Smash Bros. U is 1080p?

Directly from Nintendo.com:

Of course those are downscaled by Nintendo. But you can still notice 720p aliased edges even on those and anyway those 2 pics are exactly the same as the:

Original DKC 720p native and Bayonetta 2 1080p upscaled from 720p:

I even found the 720p native image of mario kart 8 showing that the 1080p upscaling wasn't done by Nintendo but by someone else:

Super smash bros does look 1080p on the screenshots we have.

And don't misunderstand me. The DKC and Mario kart games (With the Mario games) are among my favorite games. But I gave up any next gen illusions about the Wii U hardware. We just have to accept that Wii U is barely on par with PS360 levels. But that's OK.

Because of Nintendo Magic.

Please excuse the recent postings of the sock puppet account of a previously banned Nintendo FanBoy. They will be cleaned up soon enough.

Nintendo's typical art style is cartoonish, which doesn't place very high requirements on the hardware. Zelda Wind Waker, which has been claimed to be native 1080P, does not run even close to 60fps, nor does it use a whole lot in the way of textures.

Wuu's main CPU is also very, very weak compared to even last generation of consoles (like 1/10th the flops of Cell or roughly on that order), the GPU is something akin to what you'll find in a budget laptop, and the system as a whole has very low main memory bandwidth (half of PS360 main RAM.) So it's not a powerful design by any stretch, even when eDRAM is taken into account.

Cartoonish art style does not mean automatically that is less demanding for the hardware yet it could save up when comes to amount of space that assets take...
Of course it doesn't, but that's not what people are saying. It's a 2.5D sidescroller with simple graphics. Being a cartoon shader has little bearing on the demands per se, but the choice allows for the option for simpler graphics which are being used here.
Xbox One CPU has 34-35, PlayStation 4 CPU has 32-33 GFLOPS
They have >100 GFlops each. You really don't know what you're talking about (which is why you were removed before).

GDDR3(DDR2) on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are fast which is a compensation for the amount of RAM those two consoles had, thus a lot of developers used "tricks" by flushing unneeded and streaming currently needed assets... In reality the amount of bandwidth that Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 had with main RAM was unneeded if the quantity of it was larger...
You are sooo far off the mark, its quite tragic.

That is all for now...
That is all, full stop. You're a puppet account of banned member 'eyeofcore', which was probably a puppet account of a previously banned member if you remember the ban notification you received.
