Why Factor 5 left Nintendo for Sony

Matt responds: This is going pretty far back. I wrote an article at E3 2003 about it, actually. Basically, Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage and waxed on about Nintendo's relationship with Factor 5. He proudly showed off the graphically impressive shooter Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike and then said that Factor 5 and Nintendo were working closely together on another exclusive title for GameCube, which would be revealed at a later date. Meanwhile, I had heard and confirmed just a couple days before the event that the title in question was in fact an update to the Pilotwings franchise. As time passed, I was able to talk with some of the folks on the development side and they told me that any such title would in fact not make it out for GameCube -- that instead it was being prepped for Nintendo's next-generation console.

Still with me? Good. There's a little more.

Turns out that somewhere between then and now Nintendo decided to make the Revolution something dramatically different than it had originally intended -- a machine that doesn't quite follow the same structure as those from competitors Microsoft and Sony. Although Factor 5 enjoyed a good relationship with the Big N, it has always been a very tech-savvy company, and I assume that when it learned that technology would be downplayed in Revolution, it got a little freaked out and started to evaluate other options. Meanwhile, in typical form, Nintendo wasn't exactly forthcoming or very helpful in any collaborative effort, preferring to keep every fact of its new hardware top secret, even as specs and details from the other systems began to spill out.

So to make a long story a little shorter, Factor 5 jumped ship. It's now developing games exclusive for PlayStation 3 and so obviously it won't be making any Pilotwings title for Revolution. I have no idea if legitimate work was ever really done on the now-defunct project, nor do I know if Nintendo has since assigned it to another developer. So for now, we have it listed as TBA until we hear something, one way or the other. I wouldn't hold my breath for it just yet.

To me this is one of the reason why the Nintendo Revolution will be last in marketshare next-gen. The keep doing the same ol' "we want to be different crap". Nintendo needs to wake up and realize that they are losing their spot fast. WAKE UP!!

How many people feel like me?

Well Nintendo went a different route with NDS and it's giving PSP a very nice beating.

Really?

NPD Hardware May/2005:

PSP: 250.000
DS: 57.000

Very reliable source you got there. Might wanna check this thread. ;)

As of right now it's about 6 million NDS's to 3 million PSP's. That's a pretty good @ss beating.

From 99% of market share for 66%. I agree with you

You mean the tens of millions of GBAs out there suddenly disappeard? Whooooaaaahh dude!

I'll be pretty funny when the GB Micro joins the PSP @ass beating.

PC-Engine the PSP hasn't even released in Europe yet, so whats your point? And doesn't this news from a developer kind of scare you? I know if I brought Nintendo consoles I would hate to hear news like this.

To me it just follows everything they've been saying for years. Nintendo just needs to stop and support the 3rd party. Are they scared that more 3rd party sales would hurt their 1st party sales? We all know that Nintendo's 1st party sales keep them more profitable than Sony and MS's division.

It doesn't matter that PSP hasn't released in Europe. What matters is the NDS is beating the PSP in total sales AND weekly sales when the numbers have a chance to settle down. NDS is beating PSP in Japan each week.

BTW the news doesn't scare me at all. Square/Enix seems to like what Nintendo has showed them. Would've been nice to have F5 develop for Revolution, but other than Star Wars, what other game have they developed?

He was raped by a Sony VCR (7 head)

And is your username describing your age? You have to be no older than two years old. What relevance does that give to this thread? How do guys like this keep posting like this without even getting warned?

If Nintendo can significantly advance the control interface for video gaming beyond the hand held, button pushing mechanic of controllers from today's mainstream consoles, that would be at least as compelling for a new generation of games as the leap in graphics and processing which new machines typically just bring.

Eh, think we've been through this enough, and always in the end we come to the conclusion that Nintendo is making the most money, so maybe no one has the right to tell them anything. You'll buy a nintendo console if you want what they have to offer, otherwise you'll buy the competitors product and it really wont be hurting Nintendo's purse. Sure they may not collect your bills(they aren't gonna grovel to get it either), but they certainly wont be taking a hit.

I liked having Factor5 on Nintendo hardware, but it's not the end ... I love Nintendo's software and it's the main selling point of their hardware to me. Sony is fixing me up with the rest of my gaming needs, so it's all good.
