They suck. The players as well as the formats, and the copy protection is only icing on the cake.

Can anyone offer me a good reason why my media experience would increase by doing it the official way?

And if you're required to rip the stuff anyway, why not simply download it?

No, this is not to encourage people to do that. It's just a honest question.

The only thing I can think of is: so the artists get paid to make more. And they get a pity in the current scam/sceme. A solution that let me buy and download it directly from them, without copy protection, and to play directly from my PC (because nothing else seems to work as advertised), seems to be the only one that makes sense.

Can you say: Darwin Award?

His new monitor doesn't scale well, so he "has" to play DVDs through his computer (presumably, they "have" to be ripped, rather than played from the DVD drive.

Given that he "has" to play ripped DVDs, why shouldn't he just download them, rather than buy them?

Me personally? I like owning the physical hardware, so when my computer or HD crashes, I don't lose my purchase (though that's a problem more of the business mechanics, rather than any inherent problem).

Me personally? I like owning an insanely fast broadband connection and having multiple PCs so that if my computer or HD crashes I can have back-ups in a jiffy. :)

I tend to like owning the physical media, and paying for peoples services so they can continue to make content that I'm interested in.

What do you have? My cable isn't so neato anymore :( Getting a T1 at the office with cable for backup, but that's 4 miles from home.

Me personally? I like to be honest. Play by the book. Be nice. But enough is enough. I don't like the feeling that people are laughing at me because I get ripped off like a nice lamb, while having a bad experience while being done. It's all in the game, isn't it? Pay and suffer, or be regarded a criminal and have it easy. My decision. And it keeps on getting easier all the time.

Why are you attacking him? He explained your post, which you didn't at all, and stated his opinion to your apparently open question.
