What's your dream console?

No, I'm not talking about specs. Whatever specs you want, you could always have better. I'm asking, what's your dream console design. What's it's shape. How big is it. What sort of control systems would you use?

Like the idea of customizable skins? Say so here! Want non-standardized controllers so people can use any controller they like? Let us know!

No specs. No performance numbers. No regard for output types. Don't dwell on features too much. Describe a console concept without the slightest worry for whether it would be possible or not!

I'll start the ball rolling...

...

My Dream Console would be small. The PSTwo is a great size. I'd have a basic box shape with no fancy lumps, bumps or curves, as boxes fit neatly into any space and don't interfere with any designs. I'd have a range of cover types, like brushed Aluminium, Chrome, White, Black. A digital display on the front, really swish one. Not sure what sort, but it'd have to look good. It be with a black display, contrasting with the box colour, and I'd have a matching glossy black band or something, similar to the PSTwo's glossy band. I think I'd have a really swish disc tray - smoooooooth mechanism. Not a top loader. Buttons (power, eject, etc.)would be chromed, petit, on the bottom, with a bit of travel. Not the little *click* of the PS2's buttons.

I like the idea of visual control and I want it to be able the console to know what I'm looking at, so I can select objects (menu items or more importantly, football players!) on screen by looking at them. I want controllers that you can squeeze and twist, like those pink stress-release heads if you've ever seen them. The default controller would be squishy so it molds itself to fit the user's hands. I'd probably go with controls in the DualShock layout as I like that design. They'd also be motion sensitive (switch on-and-offable) so when my sister plays her natural arm waving controls the character how she wants.

I wouldn't limit users to this controller though. I'd have USB ports for controllers and let people plug any controller they want in, with every game having mappable controls. You could also use mice and keyboards if you wanted. Heck, touch-pad even!

WiFi would be built in for home networking, internet access, and wireless controllers.

Small, silent, unobtrusive, black. Wireless, USB ports, DVI-out, 5.1 sound. Nintendo franchises alongside Sony/MS-style games. More oldschool shooters.

I really liked the n64 console . But instead of a cart drive a dvd drive. It was a nice shape . and looked good

A console that has all the games I like, with a neat design, and controllers that can be used several hours long.

But isn't that what we are all after anyway ?

i could go with either an industry standard footprint (like high end audio equipment) or something about the shape of an n64. i have to say out of all of the consoles ever made i think it's the best overall shape. but something with a standard footprint would fit better in a rack.

as far as controllers go i would love for the return of the VMU. i think that was the best idea to be forgotten from the DC. but i would go for a more standard and longer lasting power supply. maybe a AAA battery or rechargeable (charges whan you have it plugged into the system). hell, it doesn't even have to be removable, i just want a small screen in the controller.

having USB or some other standard port on the device would be nice, also. and support right out of the box for things that windows picks up as "usb mass storage device", keybaords, mice, usb gamepads ect. other than that i just want it easily networkable.

Something between Matrix and Star Trek's holodeck would be nice... I don't really care what the machine would look like since I would be too busy looking at the lady in red.

One word: Matrix.

And not the new fangled movie business. I'm talking about the original Neuromancer-Matrix. Cyber-space the way it was meant to be.

A slick jet black Ono-Sendai-deck and then you're jacked in.

And right there you've got the answer to the rest of the questions, the system is "mind controlled" allowing you to float freely, or walk or call up any action whenever you might want.

Games would naturally have set parameters so you can't start surfing the net in a racing game, whereas other Rez-type games would feel like second nature.

We have a winner!
I soo much agree... but then. .im such a cyberpunk-junkie.. Shadowrun, Neuromancer etc.. love it!

the amiga was my dream machine (not console but close enough)
How about the Amiga CD32? ;)

http://www.whom.co.uk/grundig/cd32.htm

it was basicly a amiga1200 with a cdromdrive ...aah memorys..
already 12 years ago? damn time flys ..

Yeah mostly bad memories. That machine sucked. Commodore was so out of touch back then that it's not even funny. That machine had 1kb! for game saves. Horribly outdated technology, I still regret the day I paid 500e for it.

that's the reason i didnt buy one..
i was excited but again dissapointed in the amiga1200 after i learned it was running in 50% of his potential because of the lack of fast-ram

I want those Terminator. Several thousand legions of them. So I can have my own little war game. I like them real, instead of just photoreal 8)

I want a console that has an adequate replacement for the PC mouse.
Maybe some kind of trackball solution. Whatever it is, it has to be a precision instrument.
Maybe some kind of pencil you can aim at a spot anywhere on the screen to move the crosshair there. It would have to be ultra-light though, so i can move the crosshair anywhere with the flick of my wrist while resting my arm. and two buttons.
Then i can play real FPS, RTS and RPGs on a console.
