Why do I get high ping?

I usually have to play UT99 online on Aussie Servers as there are no other servers either in India or nearby. But the problem is even on Aussie servers I get 350+ ping and one can imagine playing with that kind of ping. I have 256 kbps DSL connection.

Why do I get such high ping? My friend who is in Mumbai (he has 512 kbps) gets ~ 150. Is there a way to lower my ping? Does ping depend on the connection speed?

Aussie servers give me a ping of 10-20(UT03) but that's probably because I'm in Australia.
The connection on your side must suck because Aussie servers are dead fast assuming you live in Australia.

Generally the further you are away from a server the higher your ping will be. Your latency will also increase if you are more 'hops' away from a server. Try using the tracert command to find servers with less hops.

I tried out the new FEAR multiplayer for a bit and FREAKED to see my ping ranging from 30-50 at tons of servers.

A refreshing change, almost tempts me to try out some multi-player stuff.
