"WA! PS3 Online"......WTF is that?

I don't read Korean, but after struggling with Google Translator, my guess is that it may be a 2-hour conference or presentation of some sort in Korea about PS3 Online, for developers. Maybe.

"sliced raw fish"

:D

There's a document linked in the article too, but I can't open it (it's a korean word processor format, or something).

Yum...to both sliced raw fish and PS3 online!

Anyway, reading this hurts my head. So they're outsourcing the development (or support?) to a Korean company? Hmm, if this is true, I'm assuming they'll be charging for a service from the users...pretty much following MS's LIVE model. Though there's nothing that would suggest they would do just that. I'm just guessing.

Wow, 2007 going to be an interesting year!!!

Proper translation

IGN has a report up on this - sounds good!

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/686/686960p1.html

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Japan (SCE WWSJ) and Korea IT Industry Promotion Agency (KIPA) announced today a joint venture designed to support Online PS3 game development in Korea. Called WA! PS3 Online, this new venture will support small to mid-sized Korean developers in the hope of getting quality Online games out on the PlayStation 3.

Development houses that are selected for WA! PS3 Online support will receive monetary and technical backing. Initial funding for the development of game prototypes will be supplied by KIPA, with SCE WWSJ taking over with funding once the real development cycle starts. In addition to funding, SCE WWSJ will supply developers with technical support and free PS3 development kit rentals.

Actual development of prototype titles will begin in July following the screening of game proposals. Once a prototype has been created, if it is deemed worthy, full development will begin. Once development on the title is finished, SCE WWSJ will determine if the game will be given a full release. Titles that make the grade will be released first in Japan, followed by Korea.

Given the prevalence of online gaming in Korea, I guess this makes sense. Will any such initiatives appear outside of the Asian market though?

The article suggests at the end that the games coming out of this initiative could appear outside of the Japanese/Korean markets, but the "WA! PS3 Online" funding wouldn't cover that. A publisher would have to handle that.

If you mean if such support will be available for devs elsewhere, I'm not sure. This seems to be a specific tie-up between Sony and a Korean agency.

I don't see how they fact that they outsource development or support to a korean company imply that they'll be charging.

Didn't they do something similar when the PSP launched in Korea? Didn't it come with a utility disc to use Korea's paid service and be able to get online right out of the box?
