Hey guys . I'm wondering whats the best hardware (at the sub $75) and software to quickly transfer old vhs tapes to dvd. I have a bunch of old family videos i'd like to move over. I don't need to edit them , simply throw them on disc. Or even just create a mpeg 2 and use nero to set up menus for them.

Thanks for any help

I'm not sure if the following is the usual way, but I used to have an All in Wonder card that I used to hook my VCR to the computer through which I then recorded the incoming VHS signal. It was fairly simple using the packaged software. At the time, I wasn't able to encode the videos to MPEG2, just MPEG so the files were lol-huge.

Your best bet will be if you have a DV camcorder that allows for realtime transcoding from a analog input to DV over firewire. That way you can use a number of cheap editing programs (ie Sony Vegas Movie Studio) to simply create DVDs.

Also, having a nice playback VCR like a JVC SVHS player will also help.
