VGA-ProScan for PAL XBOX?!

As u know, the PAL xbox doesnt support any kind of progressive scan or HDTV standard, be it 480p or 720p or 1080i...

well i found this...

http://www.digital-x.de/KNOWHOW/XBOX/xbox_dx_vga_box/xbox_dx_vga_box.htm

it's in german but there's an english translation as well.... what do u guys think?

it says:

"PAL XBOX will recognise the VGA box automatically and boot the games in 480p"

is this for real? how about 720p like Soul Calibur 2 or 1080i like some other games?

the only reason i still havent bought an Xbox is because it wont output ProScan in the UK, but if this works, well i'm getting one as soon as i can...

there is a solution to this.
if you have a modded xbox you can set your xbox to USA NTSC
that way you enable progressiv scan (you xbox becomes as it where a usa unit)

yeah i know u can always mod ur xbox but i'm not too convinced about that... i mean, the dashboard will stay the same after the modding, right? if so, how r u gonna select what resolution u wanna play the game at?

and i cant be bothered to do the whole import games thing...

anyone care to comment on that VGA box up there?

if u have to come here to:
1) tell me to mod an Xbox
2) tell me how shit it is to live in europe
3) tell me to import a NTSC Xbox
4) tell me not to buy an Xbox cuz it's crap

then please refrain from posting... :D

I have this vga-box with PAL XBox and it works fine with all the games I've thrown at it (the only problem I had was forgetting to turn PAL60 on in the dashboard, yeah it matters...). Dashboard doesn't show, but otherwise you get nice 640x480 VGA out (though it's still a bit low on 21" monitor :))

great... yeah 480p is still a bit low especially with no AA but it's still the best u can get this Generation (apart from like one or 2 games with 720p or 1080i)

have u tried it with soul calibur2 or any game that supports 1080i? i suppose they would only work at 480p since u cant choose the resolution...

jpaana said:
Don't have that one. You have any list of other games that support 1080i?

soul calibur 2 - 720p
enter the matrix - 720p and 1080i (in theory)
dragons liar 3D (erm.....) - 1080i

still, every game should boot up at 480p if i got this right.... which is still better than those 5 or 6 games on ps2....

Don't have any of those yet, though I might pick up Enter the Matrix today/tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes.

Yes, all games I've tried (which isn't that much though, classics like Halo, DOA3, Rallisport Challenge, etc.) work fine.

so, does anyone know about modded Xboxes? i mean, how do u get the resolution selection on a UK modded Xbox? that dashboard thing is a softeware issue not really hardware...

i mean, let's say i get a uk xbox and mod it to play us games.

if i get US Soul Calibur 2 (for example) and want to see it at 720p instead of 480p, how do i tell the xbox to display such resolution if i cant select it from the dashboard?

If the UK dashboard is not able to display the options, you can always try using the US dashboard to see if it works if you have a modded box.

er.... thats the problem.... does modding the uk xbox make the dashboard like the US one? can anyone confirm this?

If you mod your box, even if your current dashboard doesn't give you what you want, you can always upload whatever dashboard you want to the box with FTP after running EvoX, what's your worry ?

And I think the dashboard (xboxdash.xbe) may be all the same for all boxes, it may simply read the flags of the system EEPROM for the initialization, and they can be changed with ConfigMagic.

HUH????? :? :?

the dashboards are different from uk to us. US has a nice little selection of 480p, 720p and 1080i. PAL version has a nice selection of PAL60 and NOTHING....

You think I am speaking X-BOX language ? :)

You will never get 480p/720p/1080i selection on the dash board unless you attach the component video pack to your X-BOX, it is all the same for US and Japanese X-BOX.

I suppose those VGA boxes are also seen as a component video pack to the X-BOX.

still don't get it... don't know how the us and jap xboxes work, but here what u get is just what i said above, an option to turn 60Hz on and that's it...
i thought US xboxes had the selection straight out of the box dont they :? ...

Unlike PS2, the X-BOX will detect the type of video cable and determine the options that are available to you in the dash board.

With Composite/S-Video cable, it will only show the options that are available to them. PAL boxes specific option should be PAL60. No specific option for NTSC boxes. Wide screen/Standard screen/Letter box should be standard for all boxes.

With component cable (High Definition AV pack), there are more options being shown in the dash board, the additional options are 480p, 720p and 1080i.

well, in here there's nothing more than pal60 whether u use the HD pack or not... even connecting that VGA box i showed u up there doesn't make any difference... it says so in the product description... all u have to do is go to PAL60, but that's only for screen size-synch reasons i guess... i mean, with PS2, using the Blaze Vga adapter forces PS2 to output Pro-scan AND 60HZ and thats why it doesnt work with every game, not every game can cope with 60 Hz without even getting into the games which get a bit messed up at 60Hz like Final Fantasy X.... the issues with it have more to do with the 60HZ thing rather than the VGA thing...

anyway...

u were saying.... :D

PS2 do not detect the kind of cable being plugged as it was not designed to work that way. X-BOX will detect the kind of cable plugged to the a/v output.

BlazeVGA box alone cannot give you VGA output without software support, you are indeed using the BlazeVGA boot disc to force the non-p.scan PS2 games to output progressive signal.

I think you will need to mod the box if you have tried using a X-BOX HD pack but doesn't get you the extra options.

GameCube does that too... it detects if a cable is in the digital video out port, and then allows proscan if there's something there. Otherwise, holding B during startup will do nothing, and the proscan option in Rogue Leader will be grayed.

yeah of course the software does it all, but the thing is, i havent tried the HDpack with a PAL xbox because the HDpack is not sold at all in europe since Pro-scan output was cut from PAL xboxes...
