Vaio VGN-S270 vs Powerbook G4 vs Inspiron 700m

Yeha, Baron, that's the 14.1" DV1000 I mentioned (aka the Compaq 2000). I'd be interested in what you think of the screen, and whether your friend go the Brightview option or not. The one in my local CompUSA was very hard to read, with a rather narrow sweet spot--far worse than the 15.4"ers on either side of it, IMO.

he did not go Brightview. in the pretty dim room we were in, it looked just fine and dandy, but I would expect that it does not look anywhere near as good as my 15.4" under fluorescent light.

so, you're either going to have to deal with the weight (6 and a half pounds isn't bad. really. get a laptop backpack, rather than one of those goofy cases, and you're in like Flint) or accept Intel Extreme Graphics.

1GHz G4?
That's the old PPC - 1.33 or up is now the 7457, the latest and far more 'cooler' and power-saving version.

Besides this Itried a 1.25GHz one - sme series like 1.0GHz - and I wasn't really amazed from its speed and performance... the only good thing is about G4s that they are surprisingly good at multitasking. I mean even if it takes few seconds to load up something which pops up oon my PC immediately, it still takes the same few seconds when it's actuallly the 5th-6th running application.
That's a good thing, I have to admit.

waitaminute, Logic is Mac-only now, isn't it?

THE BASTARDS! yar. (just reread the initial post and totally forgot about that... gargh! I LIKED Logic!)

Yeah. Last was v5.5 for PC, I believe.

Though it isn't a main reason, it's just something which considered as a pro against PB's slower CPU/older technology...

I use Logic on my dual G5, that's way better for it - if you wanna use it on your PB and you have a quite complex project, you either A) switch off a lot of track/effect//instrument or B) use your G5 CPUs as slaves over gigabit.

the more I think about it, the more I think you should just go with one of the 15" widescreen ones from HP or Dell (but I warn you--the AC brick on the Dells is freaking HUGE. a pound or so...). a backpack makes it easy to carry, and after carrying it for 5 hours in the airport on Sunday, it's really not so bad (and I'm not exactly buff :p ). I would definitely recommend the backpack, though, because it also makes it harder to identify as a laptop (and therefore less likely to be stolen).

Nah, c'mon... I wrote my wife's parameters... ;)

I don't wanna see a weightlifter instead of her a year later... 8)
