I think when it comes to raw power Janis Joplin isn't far from the top. What an amazing voice she had.
Melissa Etheridge also has a very strong 'throaty' voice. Kate Bush comes to mind as powerful in a very different way.

Then of course there are singers like Sinead O'Conner (the Troy album) or even Nina Hagen (again, going for sheer power here). At her best, she blew all of them away I think. If she had had a better band, she'd be better remembered for sure :

Thanks a lot! I didn't like her live rendition, watched the covers instead, then heard her album version, and now I'm in love with the latter. The song is indeed awesome. I still don't like that first video, though, it's just too grating.
