Tombraider C., good envirorment, bad models, why?

Well, they've just announced a new model, so that's sorted.

The international face of action hero Lara Croft has today been revealed as an unknown 20 year old model from Bethnal Green, London.

Karima Adebibe, is set to be catapulted into the world of superstardom after being cast from thousands of hopefuls in an international search to fill the shoes of one of Hollywoods' biggest stars.

and this is a.. hem.. or... a very important detail

I read in the IGN that Lara's model alone contains 24MB of textures (which is 12x the total texture memory of ps2) and 20.000 polygons

It certainly doesn't show. Also, 24MB is not 12x the texture mem of PS2, that's just silly. PS2 could dip into main RAM for textures at any time.

LB apparently they mean the TM of this game for the ps2 version.

The PS2 version of Tomb Raider, or any game for that matter, will use much more than 2MB for textures. A lot of Main Ram is used for textures, always has, but i could understand if they really really don't know what they're doing and only used the EDRAM for textures, which is laughable in this day and age.

you are wrong with ps2 numbers

and 20K polys are what lies in the face of a FN3 boxer model (develepers says 3 milions per model)

correct me if I'm wrong, in msg 3 (ps2) the main model is around 4K, in RE4 (GC) the main model is around 6K, with xbox1 we rise the poly bar even higher, in current gen (x360) pg3 the models (car) have 100K polys, in FN3 3 milions per model (normal mapped or not, is an high number)

so what we must do with the 20K thing?

Hehe nice details :D
But I think the comparison is a little bit unfair because babes will always look and move better in a fighting game like Rumble Roses than a 3D platform game with huge outdoor locations.

Griffith , no offence , but almost all of your comparissons are wrong...
I mean , TR vs FN3 vs PGR3 (???????)

20k polys are 2x geometry of current gen Lara.
oh and i am definitely not wrong with ps2 numbers because its not mine speculations.
Maybe they are wrong or they didnt understand well what the devs said them about textures

Oh and I also want to add that developers were probably talking about source maps (those 3 million polygon models). There's no way we will see a 500x increase in polygon detail.

I compare TRC with mgs, RE4, pg3, fn3 etc
the genre doesn't matter when the differences are so big

we are talking of polys throughput, poly/sec, poly/model

Last gen poly/model comparison
mgs ps2 4K
re4 GC 6K
xbox av. 6-10K

Current Gen:
TRC 360 20K
pgr3 100K
FN3 3.000K NM

again, I'm talking of polys and engine, not gameplay, this is clear ;)

the '24 MB that are 12x the ps2 text mem' thing, is simply wrong
ps2 can use general mem banks to store texts, not only edram ;)

eh? Lara croft != car

hey moonblade, really you don't understand or you're making fool of me?

from a geometric point of view, two models can be compared, what is so difficult to understand?

from the point of view of hardware

100K polys flower = 100K polys king kong = 100K polys supermario = 100K polys banana

Griffith, consider that this is a multiplatform game for five systems. The other games you compare TRL to are all exclusive except FN3.

Comparing it to FN3 is not really valid considering that you're looking at arenas that I gather are much less difficult and much less time consuming to make than the environments that Lara will interact with. Now look at the different resources and how much effort would be required to make sure things run acceptably with the varying environments. In FN3, you've got a pretty static environment by comparison; no interaction nor puzzles nor much variance by comparison. There is just going to be a different focus. A lot of the focus of development will naturally be with the fighters in FN3. In TRL, the camera is going to be far away from Lara versus the FN3 characters.

To be honest ... both

I don't understand why you want to compare a car model with a character model because you can't make any conclusions based on that.
I think 20K polygons for a next-gen character model is ok. I agree Lara isn't looking that impressive but not necessarily because the model doesn't have enough polygons.

Its the best Lara has ever looked in a computer game, so why are you complaining, like somebody said this game has been developed over more than one console, its not exclusive.

A lot of the time when playing the game you will only see the charcter from a distance, (being third person and all).

It's the best Lara has ever looked in a game, as it should be really, but it looks plain bad when considering it will be the only character on screen most of the time and the platform will only have to render pretty but still fairly simple backgrounds.

Another cash in on the Tomb Raider franchise, not sure why people are getting excited.
