To what extent does the 9700 support displacement mapping?

I was wondering the extent of its implementation. I have read, somewhere, that because matrox patented their hardware implementation, Ati was not able to fully include it on the radeon and has to do some algorithms through the software? If this is true, could the 9700 comletely displacement map with no issues in hardware, it is general purpose? If it has to do operations through software, is it through a software program or shader on the gpu, or does the cpu have to compute the necessary procedures?

This question has been bugging me for a while, maybe some of you can help, maybe even an Ati guy such as sireric, or opengl guy.

Thankyou

I have seen demos on the 9700 of displacement mapping and it seems to be working fine. Some parts will be in my Hercules report. But the problem is that Hercules was not allowed to show me everything, as DirectX 9 is not out there yet...ATI is allowed to show everything in Dx9, Hercules is not.

I have some pictures from demos Hercules has on displacement mapping. And I think either Dave or me will write some article on it.
I talked to the big boss of Hercules (who closes the deals with 3dchip builders) and he will send me technical documentation on ATI and MS DirectX 9 and 10. So maybe then I can give more info....

There are already DirectX 10 documentations?!

I'd like to get my hands on them myself! :D
