I  you! I didn't realize there was such a big freeware community out there for space sims. I gave up after Freelancer disapointed me.

Ohhh, the yearly "PC games are dead" discussion, wow! We haven't had one since, err, last year :D

But, I bet we haven't had one with such pretty pictures before!

OooOoooo I don't know where to start, I think Freespace 2 Open again. That was the only game that made me . Opening scene just gets me every time. Too bad I scratched up my disk of it. But it seems I can get it back! Wooohoo. Time to dust off the joystick.

Does it work in Vista?

Edit:
Bouncing Zabaglione Bros.;1124030 If devs want to bail out of the PC market to make platformers on the consoles said:
Yeah, I know. Valves a bully! Stole my lunch too.

fs2 open works on vista not sure about retail (but you should only be playing retail if you have a really slow pc like a pentium 2)

since this thread seems to have drifted onto spacesims (how did that happen)
bestest space sim review evar

So... I made a couple of vids for Youtube.

Wing Commander Prophecy 3Dfx Test Demo
(yet more kudos to Zeckensack for his excellent glide emulator)

A Youtube comment to my earlier TIE Fighter video requested I capture the mission where the defecting Admiral Harkov tries to eliminate you with a trap. He can't have a member of the Secret Order in his force, so you are in trouble. So here it is, the first mission of battle 5 "Battle for Honor."

Can the future of games perhaps re-include these types of games? Plz? lol

I see there's a new X3 game coming. Hmmmm. Hopefully the game actually works this time around, unlike with X2 and X3 Reunion which both needed a year of patches to work right and be stable.

X3: Terran Conflict is a brand new, stand-alone game set in the universe of X3. It is the culmination of the X trilogy, with a grand finale that takes us all the way back to Earth's own solar system. Gamers can take on the roles of different characters in the X universe, or of a Terran military pilot, and experience a multitude of stories in the largest X universe ever featured - for X3: Terran Conflict will offer more missions than any other X game before. Meanwhile, X3: Terran Conflict will pose questions such as: How has Earth changed in all these years? And how will relations between Earth and its counterparts in the X universe develop?

I can't let this pass by without plugging this old game:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warhead_(computer_game)

The wiki has a link to the game, you can download it with permission from the original author even.

http://www.pelikapseli.net/old/skool/pelit/0000--0/warhead/warhead.html (also some in-game screenshots on the right)

Play it for instance with www.steem.org, an excellent little emulator.

This game was one of the coolest experiences I've had in the Wing Commander genre. Nothing beat Elite back then of course, but this was the first game I really loved after Elite, and it's very different (as I said, Wing Commander style). It has a perfect build-up and great story, very brainy mechanics (crazy physics, fish-eye lense) and an excellent solar systems navigation screen. It's not easy to get into, but it really is awesome.

EDIT: heh heh

In response to swayee the greatest spacesim intro evar (all hail its greatness)
Whey! I had a clip from that intro as my logoff sound at work: "I think we all need to look at these data a little more closely... Meeting adjourned!" :D

A question for the space sim guru's...

I am searching for a space sim with the gameplay depth like in X3 Reunion (the more advanced the better) and with top down view/third person view like in Nexus Jupiter Incident.
Relationship between races, economics, conquer worlds etc. battles where each ship really means something, custom modified, detailed battles with ability to target systems on ships, engines, turrets etc (like in Nexus).

A universe that lives with the AI to make it realistic, challenging and complex.... does that game exist?
