Would heaviness ever really be an issue? I guess taking the box home you might grumble, but the box just sits there. Weight has to be the least of anyone's concerns, and big, heavy, quite heatsinks must be welcomed by everyone too (though if the drive is noisey it won't make much difference!)
No issue here, and I agree with Arwin's assessment. There's a good 95% chance that I'll stick one place, leave it there, and move it only a handful of times in its' lifespan (say, when I get progressively better TV's. )
And if something DOES prompt me to want to lan with it...? Well, I already LAN frequently with handfulls of computer, monitor, and a bag full of kbd/mouse, cables and such, so... I'm sure it'd be a damn sight easier.
I imagine it's going to be one of those disconcerting things that you try to pick up one-handed and go HOLY F*@K, though! Hehe...
It will be certainly be devastating once we get those "destructive elements" comparing the endurance of the consoles. ~25% more weight means alot if the console is dropped from the second floor.
What bugs me more is that I`d prefer a "HIFI-Component" like look (ale old PS2) to the ugly overdesigned PS3-look.

Let's wait until Anand rips one apart.
I believe they use the rounded center "column" to fit a large fan in there that blows vertically through the unit.. At least that would appeal to me, and it's a good enough reason to tolerate a more roundish design IMO.
My feel is, the fan(s) will be on the back of the unit just like with the 360; after all there's a massive grille there which suggests hot air will be expelled in that direction. Also, blowing hot air out the top/side might be problematic if people use the unit horizontally and put something too close to the PS3.

I think the roundish design looks awesome. I sort of believe KK took a look at the L.A. convention center building at E3 time and thought sort of, "WHOAH! THAT'S the way it's gotta look!", hehehe...

The fans blow up and the hot air curves around the dome and out the back
It looks 'okay' to me. I don't like the drive bay's lower extension, which seems a common design feature of BRD players shown so far. As long as you sit the PS3 on top of other devices (and lets hope they can cope with the weight) it'll sort of fit in. It's no worse to fit in with a current system than Slimline PS2, which doesn't go with anything. I guess KK wants the PS to stand apart and get people noticing it. I do wish there were different designs to choose from so you can pick the one that most suits you, like PC cases.
Nah, only console + power-brick (excluding the cable from power supply to outlet) is somewhere inbetween 4 and 4.5kg according to what the package stickers for my broken 360 and the returned console said.
