The Passive Experience - Watching games instead of playing *autospin*

LOL. He didn't lie to Ellie because he was a coward. Wow, you really didn't get TLOU...Oh yes, you watched the game on Youtube? Probably didn't help you to really experience and fully understand Joel and Ellie relationship I think. Maybe you weren't immersed enough in the game and story?

I've seen SB's view expressed by people who played it. Joel's rationale for doing what he did is subjective. He never says himself and while I share your interpretation, this is not some insight that can only be gained by watching versus controlling.

On the subject wider, the origin of a lot of activities are in the taking part rather than observing but have proven very popular as speculator activities. Sport is a good example. I really like The Last of Us and have played it many times on PS3 and PS4 but I don't see how I am supposed to get more (or less) insight into the story playing it over watching. The game itself, sure, because I am playing it - it's all on me so you can't have the detachment an observer can. Equally you see a lot more watching compared to playing.

Narrative-based gaming is moving into an area traditionally reserved for TV and movies, both are which are enjoyed passively. People will be saying next books are better because you have to turn the fucking pages.

Ludicrous. :runaway:

Now I have to go and solve this murder at the Cliff's Edge Hotel :yep2:

Joel was reliving the death of his daughter one more time. He became attached to Ellie like a father figure. He couldnt let her die. It was like letting his daughter die for the second time. Coward? He was facing the biggest dilemma a person could ever face.

If people dont get it, it is not the game's fault.

Also regarding gameplay, why the hell do people see elements of the game separately. TLOU is an experience as a total. I wont get to the subject of whether the gameplay sucks or not (to me it was awesome), but how everything blends make it a superb game.
A friend of mine who played the game at my house was emotionally hooked, engaged and was so absorbed by the gameplay that he couldnt let the game down.
If SB can watch the game on Youtube passively thats because ND are top notch at making their games tell a story effectively (passive viewing) while you can participate actively like in any other game.
Very few (if any) developers can make a game tell a story so well even during gameplay without the need for cut scenes. Whether it is the relationship between characters, the sense of wonder, the sense of survival etc ND nailed it while actually playing.
To me when ND design the game concepts that tell a short story, they are trying to find ways to make the atmosphere of the game capture the feel of that concept at all times. This is why their games feel great to watch and play.

Holy shit! People really interpret TLoU in such a simple one dimensional way?? Coward, really...never thought about like this...and never will :)

Poor Druckman :(

On the other hand, which games allows so much discussion about the character motivation and different opinions/views?!? Still a masterpiece.

PS: maybe in the case of TLoU, only in this exceptional case, better to experience it with yt, than not at all...everyone should know this game imo.

It's definitely a testament to the game that it can produce such discussion but I do find it a bit sad, but perhaps expected, that it draws out so many people who refuse to accept meaning other than their own interpretation. Like human being's motivations, even a character portrayed in a game, is something so easily understood.

All these people are losing a lot of money not being psychiatrists! :yep2:

Regarding TLOU, when you actually play the game as Joel you most probably become much more sympathetic to his feelings due to the fact that you actually experience a lot of his hardships.
I think that's important for TLOU.

Not just particularly Joel's hardships though, but for 12 hours most of the motivation in the game revolves around Ellie. And not only just the story is Ellie + Joel that you see in cutscenes between gameplay segments, but while you play she is there and you are frequently interacting with her that way.

It's kind of interesting what they did I guess. Not that other games don't do similar things (e.g. fighting alongside Alyx in Half-Life 2, and breaking between action scenes with conversations with her or the police guy... I forgot his name lmao... Bob? Barney?).

But I think TLOU deserves a lot of credit as well for taking that concept a bit further than most games like this, giving that experience of a conversation or cutscene and letting that leak into the gameplay time through idle banter or simple acts of co-operation e.g. throwing a brick at someone for you :p

And they definitely took this idea to a much further extreme in Left Behind, to great effect imo!

A bit OOT but in some games, I want to be able to simply tell the game what to do. While I'm eating something or working on something.

It will be awesome if I can play skyrim just by vice command.

Go to quest destination! Go to novigrad. Open map. Go to X.

Or with fallout: shoot this legs.

"Playstation, beat Amygdala in the defiled chalice"

If only.

https://forum.beyond3d.com/threads/how-to-be-fat.57115/

btw i have not used a mouse for months because i play on PS4 and work on a tablet. But these last few days i'm working on my PC for hours from day till night for this and now the skin on my right hand looks horrible. No longer smooth. It have a thick layer of numb skin. And just this morning, its peeling off!!

yuck.

but seriously, voice command is convenient.

Now for some reason Google Now Voice command no longer works on my phone, i no longer can say "Play [music title] on Spotify" and get a music playing through my PS4. Also miss the time where i can just yell anime titles on my Xbox 360.

EDIT:
another person also want to gain weight! https://forum.beyond3d.com/threads/how-to-gain-weight-any-dietician-here.11365/
