I am in kind of the opposite camp where it looks like RDR2 has more details in scene then what I saw from TLOU2. I guess its difference between 200-300 people and 1000+, but for me, apart from faces and facial animations, I would struggle to say TLOU2 looks more detailed then RDR2 (from gameplay that we saw).

I also think current developers are bottle necked more by artistic side of visuals then tech side. For example, Last Of Us 2 for me looks much "flatter" then RDR2 when I look at the scenes from latest trailer. Similar to how UC4 looks nowhere near as good as RDR2 in settlements (Madagascar level). Flatter lightning, less volumetric effects such as fog and mist, simpler NPC animations, harsher LOD etc.

R* knocked it out of the park when you take a look into artistic side of RDR2 which is completely underrated. Where's TLOU2 looks like modern day zombie flick in tone and artstyle, R* has used 19th century American Landscape paintings as starting point of how to achieve the look of the game. Polgyon had great article and interview with Aaron Garbut (R* lead art director since GTA 3) about entire concept and artstyle of RDR2. This is why I think, at least from my perspective, that nothing really compares to magnitude of visual splendor that RDR2 had. Its just insane how every point of gigantic map looks so good, no matter the weather, time of day or distance you are looking from.

Few pictures I would share to show what I'm talking about (notice the depth, gradient of weather, mist and fog in those shots)

It's such a shame RDR2 is such a chore to play...I really should give it another try.

But when comparing these 2 games, I guess we should be comparing on base PS4 when released?

Well, DF and many others share the same thoughts. Sony AAA studios kinda stood above other devs 8th mid-gen, for the first time if were including all platforms, but later in this generation they arguably got outdone in the total scale (non-gameplay wise). offcourse not including pc versions.
That explains why we are seeing and getting reactions like this, compared to the first time we saw something of last of us 2.

But when comparing these 2 games, I guess we should be comparing on base PS4 when released?

We have only seen 1440p cutscenes last of us 2 on Pro. I assume it will run between 900 and 1080p at a more unstable framerate on base models. But offcourse it would be fair to compare games on the same platform.

Yea, its very "heavy". I guess R* will release remastered version for PS5/Scarlett next year, along with PC version, that will probably have lower latency and faster control movements so that would make it much easier to play, because for sure this is not everyone's cup of tea.

Long shot, but that would be something else if they put some effort in some 'above Ultra' settings for the pc version, with RT ingredients. Next year AMD hardware with RT at respectable prices could enable people play that at 4k 60fps. Beast of graphics then. Can't wait for next-generation games to come, great times ahead on next gen amd next gpu's and consoles. Nvidia will have to level their over-priced products. Great times ahead indeed.

i do agree that rdr2 on a scale of realism and interactivity with the environment is impressive.
The thing like fire spreading and burning an entire area outdoor or indoor got me wowed.
Both worlds from TLOU 2 and and RDR2 are believable and provide different atmosphere due to the settings and game design.
I don't know the limits of the engines but maybe more hardware limited than design choice.
I love TLOU2 design. From the areas to the characters and interaction aiming at creating tension and the feeling of being hunted and not safe whether you go.
RDR 2 for me was more of feeling in a big valley and immersed in a breathable living world.
And I'm not sure i would like a TLOU to be open world.... That is the kind of game for me that wotld break the illusion of motivating the player to keep going and foklow the story.
I haven't finished RDR2...i like it but I'm so distracted by the side quests I'm not motivated to finish the game yet where in TLOU2 druckmam said the would be just moments not focusrd on the main quest but still be linear and focused on the story to learn more about.

So far AI and motion matching are the things I'm looking the most for TLOU 2 and next gen.
One thing that got me worried a bit is the companion behavior but they said they worked on that.

I loved the first one, I wanted more of the same...but RDR2 just went too deep with all the controls.

RDR2 also benefits massively by 8+ years of development, where R* is basically unique in the gaming space that they're able to do that. So yes the tech is fantastic but the artists are literally able to spend years building the world. Something like TLOU also has a long development time and obviously benefits from that but the resources and time R* has just eclipses everything else.

The long development time is a big disadvantage to current games. We aren't seeig as many big titles as in the PS2 era, where we had two God of Wars, two gran turismo's, bunch of ratched and clank, MGS2 and a 3, and the list goes on. Gears 5 and wolfenstein 2 didn't have such long development time or? They are up there with the bigger studios atleast.

The usual suspects downplaying anything Sony in this thread it's so transparent.

Anyways for me it's always the sum of it's parts where Naughty Dog deliver for me.
Honestly to me we have got to a point in graphics where the the slight difference between the big games aren't that important to me.

Even next gen I'm more hyped for what they will do with the massively better CPUs than the graphics.

You could also say, the usual suspects downplaying anything non-Sony. Don't think anything like that is happening. Sony is up there with the best, they just aren't standing there by theirselfs anymore, and that could be a hard pill the swallow for some.

Even next gen I'm more hyped for what they will do with the massively better CPUs than the graphics.

The CPU's are going to deliver in the graphics department too if we are going to see more 60fps oriented titles appearing o either console.

I'm for better graphics always but without sacrificing gameplay and fun. I mean realistic physics and behavior but not breaking the main goal of a video game which is the gameplay experience first.
I remember last gens even there were PR talks about how the wouldn't be loading time anymore.
Where every bullets would stick in a hole, bodies or objects not disapearing.
All those controversial talks in shooters complaining about how many bullets to take down someone.
One thing that pissed me off was in gtav failing a timed mission because of the traffic jam lol. I was like ok thats not fun.

So yeah finding the balance between graphics, realism and gameolay depending on the game.

I hope this time around there won't be any censorship in TLOU2 for eu version of the game.
There was no dismemberment in the EU version compared to the US one in both multi-player and solo.

I'll be posting a bunch of screenshots of tlou2 in the gears 5 thread, so we can have unbiased discussions about how the two games compare.

Hold my beer.

I feel you on this one. When I want to turn in an early night. I put on RDR2.

I agree the comparison posts need to end. This is not the thread for this.

Sure you might be right with that selection. But those are all exteriors and most from some distance. RDR2 might have the better landscapes.

But TLOU2 has more details inside buildings (and better interaction with stuff), better vegetation (with physics applied on all of them) and higher quality of assets (higher resolution of texture) notably inside buildings.

People that played the demo have being very impressed by the level of details inside the random buildings.

RDR2 PC next month should put this debate to rest

I tried replaying RDR2 on PS4 about three weeks back and gave in. The controls just aren't good but I'll be keeping a close eye on the PC version and whether Rockstar (or modders) can mitigate some of the control issues. I enjoyed RDR2 when I first played it, but as I posted in the console thread, there are a lot of barriers to that enjoyment. I just can't overcome those barriers for a second playthrough and this is the first AAA Rockstar since GTA III where I've felt like that. Shitty controls did not stop me replaying GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas over and over on PS2. Or GTA IV on PS3.

I bought GTA V on PS3, PS4 and PC, yet I can't bring myself to play RDR2 a second time on PS4. I loved RDR on PS3 and there was a lot wrong with it technically. It makes me worry about GTA VI.

RDR2 PC next month should put this debate to rest

Next month is only Stadia, in 2 months it's on PC. Or so I heard.

Edit: wont be on Steam until 2 months, but will be on yet another PC Store next month.
For PC players who don't want to use Rockstar's launcher, the game will also be available via the Epic Games Store, Green Man Gaming, the Humble Store, and GameStop on November 5.
