Why is a lower ping an issue?
Are you the kind of person who goes by an alias like "High Ping Bastard" and attempts to get a giant ping just for namesake or something?

I've been using ZA since my uni days and never had any problems, except for lower ping in online games (which I almost never play anyway).

Yes, at that time it was unbeatable. I think I use Ultraedit nowadays for most I did with that. Searching, hex-edit and the like.
