Superheroes

He's got Robin, so rumor has it he's not necessarily anti-gay marriage/civil union. ;)

Superman over everybody else compined!
I like Superman because he is a textbook superHERO, nowadays he really is an exception, everybody else has some major issues or they "lurk" in the shadows. F*** that shit! I wan't my pure larger than life superhero who always does the right thing!

Well actually I like many other heros too also the dark ones, I just found Superman to be actually a breath of fresh air nowadays.

Batman taking out Superman... LOL:LOL: what a joke!

What the hell are those?

If you're looking for imaginative and well thought-out superheroes I can only recommend you Alan Moore's Top10 series. One of my fav comics.

I just discovered Alex Ross, although I did read Kingdom Come some time ago through recommendation by an older thread here about comics. He is great. In the artwork as well as the stories.

While I think that there are a number of European artists that are at least equal, like Vicente Segrelles or Don Lawrence, he doesn't only produce gorgeous artwork, but it fits morally as well. I can totally agree to his vision of it. Which is quite unlike the generic superhero comics.

Most of the US superhero comics are (depending on the timeframe) tacky, stupid (filler), totally stupid (I mean, really!), patriotic, US Uber All, scary, a nice sci-fi romp, Bombastic, a total disgrace to realism and sci-fi, just stupid, scary and unrealistic but nicely looking, nicely looking but horrific, etc.

Those made by Alex Ross are special. He takes all that history, and makes it into something that looks and sounds as something that might be real.

If batman is real,

he has to be filthy rich,

would that mean batman is either bill gates or donald trump?

The Wayne family is extraordinarily wealthy. The only richer fictional characters may be Daddy Warbucks and Tony Stark... and of course Santa Claus.

I think Superman was rated some years ago as the Ultimate Superhero. I think his physical, moral and mental force placed him at the top of mortal, non-magical beings within this universe. To have a weakness to only one physical element is incredible... and sensible. I'm sure Jean Grey or Dr. Strange could do him plenty of hurt because they have mystic powers that can transform the environment, but beyond that, he's rated stronger than the Hulk, smarter than any other earth based intelligence and as "morally" upright as one can be.

It's a little more than just one thing:
There's kryptonite, which apparently anyone can find in their attic.
There's his loss of power if subjected to red light like that of the sun of Krypton.
There's the occasional use of the idea that he derives his power from the sun, so that indicates some (writer-dependent) limit to how long he can stay in the dark.
There's no indication he's immune to all magic or all mental attack, though one would think magical bad guys would fare a little better than they do.

Depending on the storyline, he's had the crap beaten out of him before, even without kryptonite.

There's also old age. I don't think immortality is actually one of his assets. This has been explored in some comics before. In a few decades or centuries, he may be the most powerful guy in an Alzheimer's ward ever.

If you go by some recent non-canon storylines, he's been either forced to serve evil purposes or (in the case of the latest movie) a total pussy (and possibly a deadbeat dad for those who haven't seen it) who's afraid of his feelings.

Did any of you read The Mercenary comics, by Vicente Segrelles? How does it compare?

Personally I think Superman is the most overrated superhero. I think he has become an idol due to the fact that he is simple for people to understand, and adapt to. His name is also general. The word "super" is directly related to "superhero". He is a super man. And what powers should a super man have?

Well,......anything. If you ask a kid how he would have imagined his ultimate superhero he would have said "powerful enough to lift buildings, unpenetrable from bullets, fast, shoot lazer beams, see through walls" etc and all the expected. In general= feel and look invincible. People who havent read a superman hero in their lives also see superman as the ultimate superhero and the general view of him is the "man of steel who saves Lois" He can easily become the ultimate superhero in everyone's minds.

But as a creation he is the least creative compared to all other superheroes.
Its only recently where Superman is starting to get a new "face" in an effort to add some depth to his backround so it will be comparable to other superheroes' bacrkound when it comes to deep backround story

I was thinking about this, and I was wondering about other people's take on this.

The drawback to the superhero archetype:

Superheroes rescue people; they don't help them.

Sure, if you're trapped on a bridge about to be collapsed by Lex Luthor, Superman will be there for you. What happens when it's not so easy to fix with the ability to shoot lasers out of your eyes, or being a whiz with a batarang?

Sure, evil supervillans are a problem, so it's great to have superheroes. But there are billions of other problems that can't be solved with quick flashy powers, and superheroes often do jack all about that. If it weren't for supervillans, superheroes would just be asses who could fly and look like Greek gods all the time.
Look at the superdickery examples. Without a major bad guy, Superman's just a jerk.

Where was Superman when Congress needed a push for reform in government contracting?
Where was he when the owner of hole-in-the-wall diner grabbed a handful out of the tip jar?
Where was he when Bob down the street lost his dog and needed a shoulder to cry on?

I'll tell you where: out back behind Justice League headquarters sucking face with Wonder Woman.

Example 1:
Busty McTitsgirl: Oh no, the car I'm in is careening down this embankment towards the cliff. Aiyeeee!! *jiggle!!!!*

Supes: Don't worry miss, I'll save you!
*saves her, she jiggles*

Example 2:
Little Tommy: My daddy left my mommy, and my feelings hurt.

Supes: Uhhh. Hmmm. Hey look, I can bend a steel I-beam! *grunts, bends beam*

Little Tommy: *bawls*

Supes: Oh, oh jeez. I--I could... well, in that one movie I kissed Lois Lane and made her lose her memory of who I was, I-I guess I could...

Little Tommy's Mom: *screams* Get away from my son you pervert!

Little Tommy's Brother: Superman's like Michael Jackson. *giggles*

Supes: I guess I could take the foot out of my mouth by flying around the world so fast I turn back time.

Little Tommy's Brother: Like in the movie?

Supes: No, like after the time I woke up with a hangover next to Bruce Wayne. There was no way I was letting that plot line work its way into canon.
