spyware

Has anyone else noticed that the crap they're loading into our browsers is getting worse and worse.

I've spent over 3 hours these past two weeks, wasting my time looking up info on how to kill various spyware/adware crap.

The irratating thing is, that the usual programs like Hijackthis and adaware don't usually catch everything (or if they do, it finds ways to come back)

There's absolutely nothing more distracting when im doing work, than having some porn site or some 'internet is slow' site popping up on my screen every 5 minutes.

This latest one (vx2.xxx) I actually had to scrounge around looking for my windows cd so I could boot off disk, and delete the files manually.

/end rant

No, I hadn't. I use IE 6 w/googlebar and update/run AdAware a couple of times a week and I really haven't had any problems with spyware in a long time. :)

I use Spybot S&D and update it regularly and keep my system fully "immunized" as well as using spyguard.

oh yeah, and I use netscape.

Using Mozilla helps a lot. IE allowing ActiveX stuff to run without asking you as default means it's easy for spyware to install itself to IE. Using Mozilla instead give you a lot more control and stops a lot of the ActiveX exploits dead.

Still, I've not had any major problems on the few occasions I've had to use IE that Adaware and Spybot S&D couldn't sort out.

i have been useing firefox too since about a month ago when i had some damn addware that was poping up a page for dsl service every time i treid to submit an edited post here on b3d or pressed any number of other random buttons around the net.

1. Don't use Internet Explorer.
2. Disable cookies as much as you can.
3. Close all incomming ports.
4. Don't even try to use the build in firewall in XP, it doesn't help.
5. Disable popups, install the Mozilla Firefox ad-blocker and flash-blocker.
6. Don't use a non-password protected administrator account as standard in Windows. Create a separate user account that you use for everyday useage.
(7. Don't use Windows... :p)

I use IE with popup stopper and have no probs... Im probly too poor to advertise to ;)... I did remove some 300 spywares a couple weeks ago actually with the aid of spybot. Had to manually remove one that spybot couldnt remove... god only knows if the rig isnt already infested tho...

It's not displayed on the web page yet, but a New Spybot Search & Destroy 1.3 RC3 may be out shortly following final beta testing. I downloaded and installed it and immediately found 48 new Spyware apps to remove ( and I normally ran Spybot 1.2 & Ad-aware 6.0 daily). Has some really neat new features -- one is Resident (System tray) which runs in memory and stops spyware/adware from installing if bypasses IE security. Also has an option to display msg everytime it stops illegal installations (default is silent mode). I've seen this in action and definitely can state it works very well and I've had no problems. And the interface is more friendly!

The link below is for anyone who want to try it:

Freakily coincidentally, my work PC stopped working properly this week. Turns out there was so much fucking clutter from bugs i apparently picked up from the internet, that Explorer was totally dead. Could not get into the internet 90% of the time, and i couldn't even get into My Documents or any other folder in my system. Explorer would just stop working...
Same happened to around half of our company's PCs. Took the ICT team 2 hours to sort out my one alone......

Thank god i had a bad experience last night with my flatmate's iMac or i'd be here praising Apple and throwing curses at MS....

Im at my wits end.

I've now run and installed about 9 different spyware removal programs including powerful ones like hijackthis. I've deleted like half of my registry, rebooted in safe mode well over 20 times.

Invariably, after like 6 hrs, each additional scan reproduces like 40 tracers of *different* adware.

I use IE and like it a lot.. But hell, its getting to the point where I might just go back to Unix machines to do my work.

I gave up with Adaware after it decided that it wanted to exterminate a crucial part of my anti-virus software
