This will be an interesting one to watch. This could do for the shooter genre what MK did for the racing genre, or smash bros for the fighting genre. Nintendo's has a knack for making compelling experiences that are still very accessible to new players. Its being developed by a very young team at EAD, so perhaps Nintendo is ready to let some young talent blossom on their own. Miyamoto is a god in the videogame world, and for his franchises I do believe in him keeping a watchful eye on them, but letting some unproven talent create some games in genres gone almost completely ignored by Nintendo is probably a step in the right direction. Splatoon will not be a game that appeals to you COD campers who live for racking up the best KDR they possibly can. Its going to be controlled chaos.
