Sony's Feb. Event Speculation (still alive and kicking)

Regular
Stolen from GAF Insiders:

"All I can tell about this (I don't have specific informations about the Feb event other than "seems like it's gonna actually happen") is that there is lot of "internal activity" at Sony as of lately, with top management PS3-specific meetings and such being arranged around the world as we speak.

I bet an announcement will be made next week. Hope to collect "

-and-

"The PS Festival, or whatever Sony ends up calling it (and no, it's not Destination PlayStation or Devstation) will take place at the end of February, most likely between the 24th and the 26th at Makuhari Messe."

I can vouch for TTP in that he's a member of the press, at a pretty well known magazine in Europe. I hope he's correct. Although he was not referring specifically to a Feb "event" just that we are likely to see announcements soon (aka before E3 - the point he was contesting was that we wouldn't see it again till E3).

Aaah but massiveattack is a fairly trustworthy insider, and he's still pointing towards an end of feb. date, so who knows.

read the new posts he put up there since I posted this last night....he's definitely referring to the Feb surprise.

Oh, MassiveAttack is definitely referring to "the" Feb PS3 event, but I'd urge caution.

He's teased for the last couple of weeks, each week, that it was likely to be announced in that week, but we've had nothing.

He might be right, but we'll see. I know TTP knows what he says, but I don't personally know the same of MassiveAttack.

I'd like to see this happen but I have my doubts.

If it's a big event, they need to notify media and PR now, in order to get people to show up and cover the event.

You can't drop a big event at the last minute and expect too much coverage, especially from foreign media, which would have to plan the logistics of whom they'd send, making travel arrangements, etc.

Such an event would not be so much aimed at foreign media. They have freelancers in Japan who usually cover such events anyway.

I agree that notice needs to be given anyway, though.

I don't know, you'd think the US would be a huge strategic market for them.

Sure they could get freelancers to snap a couple of shots. But if they had some grand things to show, like maybe actual game demos, they'd want full-force coverage with videos and such.

Plus you'd want the outlets to play up and hype up the event in anticipation, at least a week out.

Then again, Sony hasn't used the Apple playbook, which does invite media a couple of weeks out and then show only products they're ready to ship at that event or only a month thereafter.

One week's notice is all you'd need for most of the big media companies. They would get someone to cover it one-way or another.

But yea a bit more time for better planning would be good.

I just want launch date information so I can start my pre-order and wait.

Speng.

I don't expect to see much happening until E3, other than tightly NDA'ed developer conferences.
Sony changed their mind last year about showing off PS3 before the end of March, IIRC, and waited until E3. I suppose there will be some event in Japan prior to launch, but not in Feb and maybe not even in March.

I certainly won't mind being wrong though.

There are international news agencies such as AP and big newspapers / TV networks have their Tokyo offices anyway. To reach the biggest audience, specialized media such as gaming press and MTV are secondary, I guess.

Well I hope they show something soon, I finally feel prepared to move tonext gen. Got the money and I've played everything on the current system I want to play.
So far I'm leaning towards PS3+REV since the Xbox was so underwhelming last gen and the 360 looks to just be more of the same. The one thig that can turn me around is if Sony fails to show much in the way of FPS games. The one thing the Xbox did better was FPS games.

Edit: Also I was wondering why do people seem to think that becasue Sony hasn't shown anything that that means they don't have anything. Why would Sony get people hyped about a next gen product, when there isn't one on shelves for sale yet, and they still have two very popular platforms that they can sell.
I mean they started making the PS3 right after launching the ps2, which gave them what, 18 months head start.

Because some people only believe things that they can physically see.

I heard alot of talk before last years E3, that because Sony said nothing about the PS3 and it's specs leading up to E3,that they MUST have NOTHING to show. They couldn't have been more wrong. I would say until Sony prooves otherwise, it's OK to beleive them.
