Mole: Sony Has No More PS3 Test Kits?

The PLAYSTATION 3's plight to store shelves has been surreal. If you think things have been hard on the consumer end, try making games for it. How bad have things been? For months, we've been hearing reports of Sony's lack of developer support. Worst yet, the company is now apparently running short on developer hardware and leaving everyone in the gray. Our Mole (no, not an Insider, a Mole) dishes:

Sony has run out of PS3 test kits to give to developers. Since the announcement of the European launch being delayed, nobody has any idea what's going to happen with the PS3 port of F.E.A.R... specially since we only have the one PS3. And it's a devkit. In case you haven't seen those things, they sound like giant vacuum cleaners. They're reportedly ridiculously complicated to use, specially when upgrading the firmware. It has just the one controller, and it's not even the proper PS3 one even! It doesn't have those "innovative" changes from the PS3 controller, it's just a Dual Shock 2 with a USB Mini port.

Somewhere in a Twilight Zone-like third dimension, all of this is going off without a hitch, I'm sure. Brian Ashcraft

from the article:

I have seen it mentioned here on B3D a few times how PS3 devkit is comparatively quite silent.

Can we have a 48 hour moratorium on bad Sony PR?

I'd prefer a permanent moratorium on BS reporting, but that's just me..;)

I'm sure there are developers out there who'd like more kits. But it's a stretch to suggest they're "running out" considering that other developers apparently have them coming out of their ears (and actual, final, quiet ones). This is just someone making noise for attention (and Kotaku is more than happy to oblige given the attention any PS3 news gets now).

PS3 in more trouble - Sony running out of devkits

...which don't even have the "innovative" controller that's supposed to come with PS3 - but rather just DualShock 2 with MiniUSB port

Before this week, we've been wondering why Sony has kind of just been sitting around in the shadows. Now it's all unfolding. There have been some internal problems with the hardware, and everything's snowballing now. Yesterday, Sony delayed the PS3 in Europe and drastically cut the launch allocation in the rest of the world.

It's tough for consumers, sure, but apparently it's even worse for game developers. According to a source at Kotaku, they've run out of PS3 dev kits. In fact, they even have been using outdated hardware for a while.

Here's exactly what this guy had to say: "Sony has run out of PS3 test kits to give to developers. It doesn't have those "innovative" changes from the PS3 controller, it's just a Dual Shock 2 with a USB Mini port."

I think one of two things will happen as a result of these last-minute headaches. Either it's going to really hurt Sony with the PS3 hype, or it's all just going to even out to a small wrinkle in the PS3 lifespan and in the long run won't affect it at all. Only time will tell.

This was posted yesterday, and poo-pooed by devs here saying it's not a problem. _phil_ has just received 25. It's bunk, Kotaku sensationalism. Kotaku isn't a sensible reference point for news or views. In fac tthe FAQ should have a balck-list of sites people aren't allowed to reference!
