Kutaragi also talked to Nikkei about various aesthetics of the Cell chip. He commented that the microprocessor comes with eight Synergistic Processor Elements (SPEs), since the number eight is an "exponential aesthetic." He also added that the Cell uses only seven of them since that's "the ultimate aesthetic" in an engineering sense; at E3, Sony revealed that ignoring one SPE as a redundancy will improve the chip’s yield and allow production costs to drop dramatically.

You may want to do a search, this was discussed a lot already in previous threads during E3 madness in the middle of May, i.e. last month ;)

7 = ultimate aesthetic? Maybe there is something in the translation there that is getting lost, but sounds a lot like "Zen of gaming". Feng Shui for engineering design... That's some seriously flowery language to describe a cost-cutting move. KK is definitely a little weird...or passionate, I suppose depending how one wants to look at it....

btw, I think this may really belong in the Sony PR thread.

This thread has been locked due to it not being in Sony PS3 PR thread. It also has been discussed in past threads.
