Shrink existing partition, create a new one and install Vista

Greetings dear friends,

My Dell XPS 2 laptop has only one partition. I've freed enough space to use one of those partition managers and shrink the size of the partition and create a new one, into which Vista will be installed.

What partition manager do you recommend? Is it a risky operation?

Thank you in advance.

Partition Manager seems to be the best known partition manager and it's what I use.
Is it a risky operation?
I once lost all my data that not even data recovery software could recover when repartitioning on a RAID0 system but haven't had an issue with non-RAID systems.

Is it a risky operation?

Yes. I've had a partition resize fail on me several times. So far I've never really lost any important files, but I've been forced to use recovery software to get my files back. I strongly recommend backing up any important files you have that you can't afford to lose. Also keep in mind that if a resize of the main Windows partition fails, chances are your OS will be junk and you'll need to reinstall everything.
