Pritchard up, mobile next for Sega
29 April 2005 By Stuart Dinsey
SEGA will unveil a dedicated mobile games division within the next fortnight and, at the same time, has appointed a new UK managing director.
The Japanese giant has become a multi-format publishing force in Europe and the US, building operations on both sides of the Atlantic over the past two years.
This will be demonstrated further by announcements at E3 next month and its increasing control of owned and signed IP. Sega is setting up its own mobile operation and has signed a one-year exclusive deal with an as yet unnamed aggregator.
As 3G content starts to emerge it will then work with network operators via its own portal. “Mobile is a business that is growing and costs are relatively low,†Sega Europe’s COO Mike Hayes told MCV. “We are up there with Nintendo and EA as having the most attractive IP.
“It makes sense for us to have more control over content. We are great admirers of what EA has done in this area and will be following a similar path.â€
Sega has decided to split its central and UK operations -promoting Alan Pritchard (pictured) from sales director to UK MD.
A more defined central team sees Gary Knight become Euro marketing director and Matt Woodley creative director. Gary Dunn has quit Codemasters to become development director.
