Sony Computer Entertainment Acquires Guerrilla Games - leading developer of Killzone franchise

Guerrilla To Operate As Part of SCE Worldwide Studios network

London, 7th December 2005 – Sony Computer Entertainment today announced that it has acquired leading developer Guerrilla Games to further expand its development capability as part of Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS).

In a strategic move to secure long term excellence in game development for current and future PlayStation® platforms, the acquisition of Guerrilla has formalised the already close working relationship between Sony Computer Entertainment and the studio.

Guerrilla B.V.(http://www.guerrilla-games.com), based in Amsterdam, Netherlands is the award winning developer of the Killzone game for PlayStation 2, which has shipped close to 2 Million units worldwide. The studio is currently working on a new Killzone title for PLAYSTATION 3, early scenes of which were shown to wide acclaim when revealed at E3 earlier this year. The studio is also developing a further game within the Killzone universe for PlayStation Portable (PSP). Guerrilla signed an exclusive development agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe in March 2004 and the acquisition will help the team grow as a key creative element of the SCE Worldwide Studios network.

Commenting on the acquisition, Phil Harrison, President of SCE WWS, said, â€￾Guerrilla have a great combination of creative, technical and production talent in their team and we have enjoyed a close working relationship with their management and staff for a number of years. I am delighted that they will now become a member of the SCE Worldwide Studios network of developers. As we prepare for the launch of PLAYSTATION 3 next year, this acquisition strengthens our development portfolio to take full advantage of the exciting entertainment opportunities provided by PSP, PLAYSTATION 3 and beyond.â€￾

Hermen Hulst, Managing Director of Guerrilla said, "Sony Computer Entertainment - with its truly global presence, leading platforms and commitment to innovation – is an ideal partner for Guerrilla and we are delighted to take our existing relationship to the next level."

On a side note, I picked up Killzone on monday because I wanted to try it for myself (and it's greatest hits now, so $20), and I actually really like it. I'm not sure why it got so much flak, but its probably the best console FPS I've played (I'm not comparing it to Halo because I haven't gotten much of a chance to play it, and I have a feeling halo is just better ;)). Haven't played any online, but that doesn't really interest me.

To be honest, I thought Sony already owned Guerrilla.

I'm interested to see what they do for PSP.

same for me.I did enjoy Killzone. the framerate isn't worse than halo ,btw it's the same ,overall.
Weapons feel and mechanics are good ,graphics and mood are from good to very good (probably the first game i see with baked AO).
Particle stuff is very nice ,enemy AI is good enough in hard mode (except when too close.melee is ridiculous ) .coop ai sucks ,level design is linear but offers good situations.
This game doesn't deserve half the bashing it get.

I saw the animation and graphics in the Japanese trailer and thought it looked really good.
I always thought the framerate was what drag the scores down of this one but if it is like Halo in that regard thats fine for me. The music seem topnotch also from what i heard.

My problems with killzone are:

LOD - I hate running up on what looks to be a PS1 character model

Physics System - Enemies ending upside down when killed (like doing a handstand) when killed against a rail. I would have preferred they stayed with the directional preset death animations. Clipping

Inconsistent AI - Ive seen it do things that seem really smart, but ive seen it wait a few seconds before it decided to fire on me. Like it was scrolling through a list of routines before it got to the "Fire" option.

Tacked on Multiplayer - Which they admitted they had no initial plans to add. They tried to fix what they can, and have even added a moderation/banning system, but grenade whoring and glitching (cord pulling - not sure what can be done about this) are still evident.

Linear - more open explorable levels would be favored, Not a huge problem for me but it is for some.

*Edit*

Oh and the repetitive voices on both the enemy and allies... i grew tired of constantly hearing the same Helghast for screaming "Arghhh" and "Kill Theeeeemm"

But you like the rest then i assume?

Hmmm, I seem to remember reading sometime last year that SCE picked up Guerilla back then, right after Killzone was released. I'll try look it up.
Anyway, I was planning to buy Killzone, but actually tried it for the first time last week. I agree with you _phil_, I enjoyed the feel of the weapons aswell as the sound of them. The "gritty" art direction was also cool.
But the soundtrack is what really got my attention! Very, very nice!

Yeah, online still proved to be a lot of fun at times. The game had a great feel to it, from atmosphere , music, weapons, sound were all very well done.

The story was coherent, and the levels though linear were very well designed IMO. I also enjoyed playing with the 4 characters, while not a huge difference, it did make you switch your style of play. Rushing through mowing down enemies with the big guy and then trying the same tactic with the assassin, only to be cut down within a few feet.

Ah, found it!
They signed an exclusive deal last year:

"LONDON, March 22 -- Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) and Guerrilla are delighted to announce the signing of a deal that will see Guerrilla, creator of the highly-anticipated Killzone game for PS2, develop games exclusively for SCEE and Sony platforms from now on."

Guess it was more practical to have them inhouse "teh Worldwide Studios";-)

Yea, the music is really well done -- I found myself leaving it on the death screen for a while just to listen to the music last night, Hah.

The game obviously has a few problems, but it's really fun and most of the problems seem more like issues with trying to do too much on the aging PS2 rather than Guerrilla's ability to make a fun game.

I thought exactly the same thing, I was talking to the lead tester over at Guerrilla and he told us about how the giant crane on the 5th level was supposed to be destructable but memory constraints wouldnt allow it, and even about a Giant Claw Wielding Helghast but again console limitations.

KZ sold close to 2 million units, nice! Best thing I liked about KZ was walking/running and weapon animation.

Ditto. When playing other FPS I always wished they had the sprint feature. I also like the weapon models and the how they sound. My favorites are the Helghast assault rifle and the Helghast machine gun. I also like how they chose to keep the colors muted. It was easy on the eyes. The voice acting in the cut scenes were decent too.

Very true. Also the camera animation added a natural feel and realism.I like how the camera moves independendly according to the character's motions.

After playing killzone when I try a fps which is better in every way there is this impression that there is something missing on the latter that makes it feel unnatural.

I think thats a feature they should add in every fps
