Recording A/V through HDMI is possible?

Hey guys it seems that recording audio and video through HDMI is possible? There are products from Hauppauge that allows this up to 1080i. I thought HDCP was designed to prevent this?

EDIT: Nevermind it says it cannot record encrypted signals even though it's advertised as being able to record cable and satellite broadcasts...

Anyway anyone know a way to use this HDMI capture card to record DirectTV A/V signals?

There at least used to be hardware boxes from some German company that could strip HDCP from the signal. Not sure if those are still available, with the recent-ish EU legislature banning circumvention of copy protection measures...

I think the only way you'd be able to record a DirectTV signal is via a cablelabs authorized CableCard, however afaik they dumped the idea of ever producing one for their service. I'm just building a HTPC for home to replace my DVR with a HTPC+Ceton InfiniTV and comcast cable card (yay 4 channels instead of 2) so I'll be able to enjoy recorded tv automatically stored on my WHS.

If it weren't so easy to just plug in component cables and record from that, there would surely be some pirate software out there to strip out all the HDCP nonsense. So really I don't know why they bother. With DRM it's always the same old story.
