Oh , the pictures are a 9700 card and the 9700 box (remember I said I had 2 black boxes ? ) Unfortunately they didn't have a 9700 I could take home

The R9000 Pro is excellent for what it was meant to do and compete with. I was first, of course, expecting it to be faster with the naming scheme of it being Radeon 9000, but once I saw the specs with only 1 TMU it hit me that this isn't going to perform like we thought it would. But it does kill it's target competition quite easily and with the price and feature support this card offers I am quite thrilled about it changing the face of the mainstream market. Finally we can get hardware vertex and pixel shader support with great performance to the sub $130 crowd.

Well, according to Anandtech's price guide, the various Radeon 8500 models have been hovering between $90 and $150 for the past month or so. The base 8500 and the LE's beat the 9000Pro in performance, and are available at a similar price point. Are the margins on the 9000 and Pro high enough, compared to the 8500 series, to justify the development cost of a new chip? I guess ATi seems to think so.

doh, your right, i just totally forgot about that that while i was writting that

what i shoulda said was ATI is marketing the 9000 as the mainstream chip, while the 8500 was marketed as the high end chip

now which one performs better in the real world obviously differs from what you can buy these things for

The smart thing if you are looking for a new graphics card is to buy a Radeon 8500 NOW.

Radeon 9000 will be a great product for those its selling to, but for those "in the know" there's nothing that beats an 8500 for the price.
