R520 to have 2.4GHz memory

Not quite get the title though. The article only tells that r520 is compatible with gddr4(not that will be used) which can be clocked as high as 2.4ghz not that the r520 actually will have 2.4ghz memory

Besides it's from nov. 04 also quite old

Why they use 2.4 GHz? It suppose to be 1.2 GHz or I missed something. :?

SDR vs DDR effective clock ratings sound unprofessional and stupid just like hard capacities are marked as GB and not GiB. Silly Windows use GB too but it means GiB. Nice mix of misleading information.

it's all in the marketing. Just like how HDD's are marketed using a straight up decimal number instead of the binary-to-decimal converted number.

With SDR/DDR, you'd just be referencing the maximum bandwidth anyway, just calculate it differently (factor of 2).

It says clearly that it will eventually be capable of reaching 2.x GHz, not that it will start off with that speed.

B3D News Report[/url]]The reports state that ATI have confirmed they are due to launch their new architecture, the basis of the R5xx series, in the first half of 2005. Goldman also believes the architecture to be based on Shader 3.0 and be very focused on the memory interface and bus. The expectation is that GDDR4 memory technology will ramp in production in late 2005 and the memory interface will be compatible with it and be designed to scale to speeds of 1.2GHz (2.4GHz effective) over its lifetime.

This time last year, weren't people expecting NV4x/R4xx to have 800/1600 MHz GDDR3 by now? And the fastest being used is only 600/1200, and even then it's underclocked.

"People" were suggesting that 420 would launch with 833/1666 MHz GDDR3. Funny enough, we are still below 600MHz today.

Considering GDDR4 isn't really giving any hints about being about I don't expect we'll see it on R520 in its lifetime, more likely towards R580 - but that doesn't preclude the memory bus to be designed with GDDR4 in mind. I've mentioned before that I've heard of a tweak to GDDR3 and that may end on R520 if they are targetting in the 600-700MHz range.

Perhaps they are adding an XDR interface.

So whats the difference between DDR 3 & 4?
I thought DDR3 was supposed to fix the shortcomings of DDR2.
So has DDR3 proven to have its own shortcomings requiring DDR4?
