Questions for Epic?

How about 'If you take out Onslaught or Assault in UT2k5, would you rather die from stab wounds or horrible burns?' as a question?

You know what? That is a fabulous question, but Tim Sweeney's the engine guy. You should be talking to level designers and/or executives about death penalties for not including Assault and Onslaught (a punishment I think we can all agree upon).

I'm interested to know if Unreal Tournament 2005 will continue to use the aging technology used in Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004 or if they will make a graphics overhaul for next season.
Very good question.

OK, I can tell you this: No specific plans for UT2005, first application by Epic for UE3 will not be an "Unreal" title.

Hmmm no UT2005, now that's a surprise. They have an EA-like (NHL/FIFA/NFL/NBA) title in their hand and are not milking it?

Dave didn't exactly say that. He simply said that UE3's first game will not be an Unreal game. UT2005 may very well come out, but it simply won't be using the new engine. It may just be another expansion, like UT2004.

Sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear there - there are no specific plans for UT2005 at the moment and the first title to make use of the UE3 engine from Epic won't be an "Unreal" title.

Any licensers for upcoming engine yet?

The engine is already in some licenees hands in a development state in order for them to get to grips with. They'll be provided with updates as they go along - the features to be implemented are pretty frozen and licensee's know what to expect. There is a possibility that engine licensee titles based on UE3 may appear before Epic's onw game does.

Evidently Epic themselves have an arrangement with Microsoft to bring this to the PC and "a next generation console" (Mmmm, wonder what that might be!) first. I asked how much of the feature and technology implemetation was influenced by the next gen console technologies and the answer was "heavily", so you can draw the inference on what tech the consoles are going to support.

I'll purposely split up dave's paragraph.

That'd be SM 3.0 .

Here are my questions:

1. Will UE3 support multiple APIs, i.e. DX&OGL?
2. If they still use OGL, what improvement do they need?
3. What effect will the new graphics framework in longhorn bring to UE3? If they have studied the new framework, is it a good one or a bad one?
4. What do they think of XNA? Is it a necessity for future game development project?
5. What technology do they want most in future graphics API evolution?
6. Is UE3 designed as a SM3.0 based engine, then fallback to SM2.0 path, or vice versa?
7. Please take a few pics for us, I found Tim Sweeney's pics are even more rare than Carmack's on the web.

Also this years winner for the MSU will get access to an Unreal Engine Licnese as the grand prize. We ask for clarification on the mailing list if it was the "old"/Currnet engine vrs the new one. Steve P's reply was it can be either, the winners choice. So since the GiveJbANewCar fund never really hit is goal, maybe I can try the GiveJbAMSUWin fund to see if that does any better :)

Actually I am not sure the mod team that wins would want the new engine as its just the engine you would get. No other code could be used so it would take a lot of work to make their game off it. The only advatnage of the "older" engine is that the mod teams allready know its strong week points and how to deal with it. And being on familar ground maybe more important to them then having the newest stuff but being cluess how it works....

my question (quite different ;) )
- Is there plans for a sequel to good old Epic Pinball? :) IMO, with nowadays tech, you could make pretty awesome pinball simulator. :)

Not sure if this interview alreay took place or not...

Continued Linux Support? I'm nervous that the MS/Epic relationship is going to put them firmly in DirectX land and linux/OpenGL users will be left behind.

Well, there is a big clue in the first post:

I'll be sitting down to have a chat with Tim Sweeney and Mark Rein in a couple of hours - anyone have anything they want to know?

My question is

You are aiming at a DX9 mimimum graphics card, but what processor power are you aiming for ?

Are your titles going to be gpu intensive or cpu/gpu intensive ?

Are you going to aim for dual cpu's in future as a baseline ?

OK, that was 3 questions :)
