If Kutaragi and Okamoto considers PSX2 as being 300 times as powerful as PSX1, then you can pretty much guess what 1000 times the power of PSX2 means....

By Okamoto's math, PSX3 is what, 300,000X as powerful as PSX1??? Hell, I don't think Pentium4 is more than 2000x as powerful as 8086 after 25 years...

Depends on how you define powerful... In many cases I'd definately consider a 3.2GHz P4EE 2000X more powerful than the original 5MHz 8086.

Moore's Law: 25 years = 300 months. Processors double transistors every 18 months. 300/18 ~ 16 2^16 = 65,536X as many transistors between P4 and 8086.

8086 = 8Mhz, 1.4 MIPS
P4 = 3.2 Ghz 3020 MIPS

Clock ratio = 400X

Seems like it's possible to me, especially given that the Intel CPUs are general purpose, and have backwards compatibility to restrain them, whereas GPUs are specialized to be highly parallel SIMD floating point monsters.

PS2 300x more powerful than PS1. What the hell are they smoking and where can I get some :LOL: All kidding aside, I am not qualified to reflect on Sony's guesstimation. I do like their real time CG achieved with 18,000x PS1's power. Puts things into perspective

oh I dunno...

PS2 paper specs 75Million pps - divide by 300 gives 250thousand pps
( close to shaded number for PS1 - unshaded flat is a bit more, about 350kish )

Core CPU improvement less - 33MHz single issue up to 300MHz dual issue only 18x

From that slide the increase in performance may be from realtime rendering code... rather than any single element.. :rolleyes:

Exactly... How do you measure power ? clock, memory, bandwidth, pixels, vertex, mips, flops ? Some kind of other index factor based on all that and more ?

Seriously it's just marketing, why would anyone take that to the letter is beyond me.

1000X is total power, whether or not it will be realized is another thing.

But It is certain they mean total power.
