I don't think Sony needs to rush into Next-Gen, they can still make a lot of money on the current PS2..just push out GTA, GT4, MGS and the other killer apps from EA on the system next year. Wait till 2006 for PS3.
Maybe I'm mistaken, but aren't those this year's games? I don't think they will be released next year.

Anyway, how well current gen machines/games sell in 2005 depends on how convincing Microsoft is about making X2 a "need."

True - Xbox 2 could look weak against a $149 USD PSP with a roster of AAA games! ;)

What I mean is:

They are this years games, but you know there will be a tweak to GTA, using the 3.2 engine to get some more cash next year.

Same for GT4, the online capabilities, and possibly Metal Gear.

So another year or slight improvements on existing franchise will still help the PS2 to do well, plus EAs yearly releases.

More screens

I'm getting one but not directly when it get's out. I'm not doing the same mistake many did when buying the PS2 at launch. I'm waiting for the first price fall and when interesting games starts coming out. ;)

But I must say this. Way to gooo Sony. Eat your heart out Nintendo fanboys with stupid claims as "it's going to cost more than 300€!!!" "Battery life is not more than 2 hours!!"

Never compare the PSP to the PS2. ;)

At these prices, it's a pretty good value propostion. That screen alone will seduce a lot of people, even non-gamers, into buying it.

It could also compete for gaming dollars when the Xenon launches. It would be the PSP's first Christmas season so you figure there will be an attractive lineup of games.

If this is the true full price the PSP is releasing for then it sort of shoots down that whole argument of PSP being aimed at a different market. Since they're obviously trying to get there price as close to DS as possible in order to compete directly with it.

Yes and no as price is simply one factor in determining the market you're shooting for. Don't forget that the PSP is also aiming to be a convergence device so it's also competing against other devices like MP3 players & movie players. So the price of the PSP affects consumer acceptance were they to be shopping in the aforementioned markets.

You only need to look at the marketing to see that Sony is still aiming for a different crowd than the usual GBA buying sector. (Oddly enough, if anything it seems that Nintendo is trying to 'sex-up' their image).

That said, if the price is true, then it certainly puts pressure upon the DS.

To you Ozy yeah, but then you were never going to be interested in DS anyway. The DS is still the cheaper system and in many ways the better system.

Certainly true for many people no doubt. Btw, were you ever interested in the PSP?

PSP certainly can compete at this price though, obviously, which it never could have at $300. Sony obviously knew that as well. If this price is the real full price for a PSP and its games can manage 4 hours (which I'm skeptical of) then we now have a real handheld war on our hands :)

Again, my argument is that the PSP is not solely competing head-to-head against the DS. Yes the price helps it to but Sony is still trying to capture a different market though they won't complain if they managed to grab some of the DS' as well. ;)

I promised myself to wait until they switch from a .90nm to a .65nm process to buy the PSP, and therefore get a longer battery life out of this.
But, danm, $185 is an awfully tempting price point.

BTW, the price of a good is not necessarily based on the market the good targets, there's plenty others factors to include into the equation.

To protect this entertainment content, a robust copyright protection system has been developed which utilizes a combination of a unique disc ID, a 128 bit AES encryption keys for the media, and individual ID for each PSP hardware unit.
It seems SONY is serious about anti-piracy measures this time. I guess there won't be any homebrew scene either on PSP then. Unless of course some poor implementation by some game developer lets somebody hack the whole thing (like XBOX).

Interesting to see that the default PSP headphones are white. Most certainly an iPod inspiration that one...
Actually, Sony's own SR71 earbuds were available long before iPods. Those are white as well, and pretty famous for their quality/price ratio.

Actually, those Sony earbuds are black (edit) in North America.

Some iPod afficionados have taken to ordering them from Asia or Europe so that they could have white ones.

I've always thought the DS would be around the $150-200 mark and the PSP around the $250 at launch. This price is 'slightly lower' than I expected and we have Nintendo to thank for that as consumers, yay!

This kinda reminds me of the SEGA Saturn/ Sony PS1 battle when Sony entered a new market against an established player and they launched close to each other. One also had more dedicated 3D hardware than the other and one was released slightly before the other...

There is still a price different for Japanese launch, but yeah their target market overlaps with Nintendo DS. Both devices will likely take market share away from GBA, instead of creating new market for themself.

Looks like SONY won't be making money on PSP hardware for a long while. I must say the price is very attractive if true. I might even get one not at launch though, gotta wait for better quality games and final thoughts on battery life. :)
