I grabbed a PSP the other day for the long flights to Thailand in a couple days. I only bought one game (Madden) and basically nothing else. What are the must haves and must knows about this thing? I realize I can watch movies, but I also have a tiny fujitsu laptop that gets 11 hrs if I rip the DVDs to the hard drive first.

games.. (duh ;) )
mp4 encoded movies (lots of tutorials online, no time to type all that)
mp3's offcourse

if you have a version 1.5 psp you can install emulators to play some oldschool games
(snes, megadrive,gameboy , turbografx etc...)

even more games :)

Disclaimer: I do not own a PSP and I have not even spent any time using one.

But... from what I gather you need at least these two games:

Ridge Racer
Lumines

And, because I recently got hooked on Metal Gear Solid, I would probably check out Metal Gear Acid, which is nothing like Metal Gear Solid from what I understand and is instead a turn based strategy game.

If I was bringing a PSP on a trip and wanted to geek out a bit I would definitely pick up some UMD movies, just because...

Oh, and you probably want to make sure that you got the latest firmware before you go on the trip so you can test the Wi-Fi Internet browsing while relaxing at a Thai massage parlor. :p

Be warned that this may prevent you from using soft mods etc etc and reverting to an older firmware for said purpose may prove impossible.

What's happening with the PSP Amiga emulator? That's the dream emulator for me.

It's been around for ages, and I can tell you first hand it works pretty nicely actually

Is the Amiga Emulator 1.5? Seeing as the EU PSP's are all 2.0+ that's awkward. Curse Sony for not embracing homebrew from the off!

what do you mean? every homebrew or whatever non sony executable is only runnable from 1.0 or 1.5 firmware versions (not talking about the 2.0 executables, they are only allowed to be 32kbyte bit)

the version of amiga emu I had wasnt very fast. around 70% , but it was nice to see project X running on my psp :)
and the crackers intro and trainer offcourse ......aaaah memories

Just didn't know what the state of PSP hacking was, as to whether anything beyond the 32kb 2.0 flaw had been developed. I can think of plenty of Amiga titles that'll be ideally suited to PSP.

I would say these games are among the best:

- Virtua Tennis
- GTA: LCS
- Burnout: Legends

Untold Legends isn't bad for a hack & slash RPG.

you can downgrade fw 2.0 down to 1.5.

Where does one get the older firmware?

I like having a browser though - instant WiFi detector without the bootup delay of a laptop while changing planes in Japan (no GSM/GPRS for the Treo 650).

You can get the 1.50 firmware from here along with various other tools. A lot of stuff can be found in there forums too.
