It looks like a simple DVD drive.
The UMD logo must just mean that the DevKit is "emulating"(speed and seek times) it or something. The PSP can load games through a cable.

The part with UMD listed on it IS a door that pops open (swings open downward) where you place the UMD into it. At least that's what I remember when I saw it briefly. I don't know if it can record though. Not sure what the PS2 dev machine is needed for (hadn't seen one near the guys working on the PSP project).
