PSN weekly updates

Interesting... what did you not like about Braid ? I thought many people liked it ?

I think it was critically acclaimed, yes, for being an original platform puzzler with an interesting time mechanic that works, and makes you feel good whenever you solve the puzzle. Many also liked the art and music. It definitely also stood out among the crowd on Live Arcade back then, which I think also helped.

So that's the answer to your second question. The first answer is probably simple - it's a matter of taste. The gameplay to me felt like that of a clumsy platformer (reminds me of the first mario, but slower and clumsier) and got in the way of the puzzle mechanic. The puzzle mechanic just didn't click with me - not because I couldn't solve it, but because it bored me. I thought the art-style was ugly as heck (again, personal taste!), especially for 2D, and by this time, I can't even remember the music, so I'm not going to guess on whether I liked it or not. ;)

With all respect to the game's creator and the many people that loved this game, my personal guess is that this is probably a similar difference of taste where some people would rate Super-Rub-a-Dub 3/10 and I would rate it 9/10. ;)

I wouldn't take Arwin's opinion on Braid as a reason not to pick it up. It's the vast exception to the rule that thought the game was one of the best released last year - that's not best indie game, or best download game, but best game.

Check the B3D or Neogaf Braid threads and see for yourself. It's a thinking man's puzzle game, with an interesting narrative and unique hand-drawn 2D art style.

I've been so careful in isolating my personal opinion from the general critical acclaim the game received, and this is how you thank me?:LOL:

I wouldn't take my opinion as a reason not to pick it up either! For instance, I cringe at the sight of NSMB for Wii, Gears of War, Halo and Call of Duty leave me cold, I can't get into the Ratchet & Clank series no matter how hard I try, and Madden games bore me to tears. Clearly I don't have the most common of tastes. ;) And look at all those perfect scores on metacritic:

http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/braid

But it's exactly because of the high praise this game has received that now, outside of the context that the game was released in back then, people that share my taste in gaming should probably inform themselves before they buy and not just go by some of the 10/10 ratings this game has received. ;)

Appreciate what you're saying, Arwin - I'm simply pointing out that your opinion of Braid shouldn't deter anyone with a PS3 from getting it. It's a fabulous game that nearly everyone who picked it up adored. The headache with message-board opinions is a single undissented voice may be interpreted as the general opinion - which in this case it most definitely is not!

On a side note. Having a LOT of fun with the Star Trek game. Reminds me of an old 2D multiplayer shooter Subspace that I used to play WAY too much. Controls and ships are nice. Quick and easy to get in, long time to master. Little disappointed in the resolution and it hinders game play.

Awesome. My PS1 died before this was released over here (if it was even released over here... PAL PS1 gaming was so incredibly ripped off :( ) so I'm looking forward to it.

I keep breaking my "no more games this year" rule. I have about a dozen PS3 games to complete, ODST, Brutal Legend, Borderlands, and will likely buy the GoW Collection after the glowing reviews, and now probably Vagrant Story too. I also have half an eye on Gyromancer this week too. Stop stealing my money, gaming!

There's a preview of Firmware 3.10 on the Playstation Blog by the way, showing the Facebook integration features (which are currently limited to automatically posting events like trophies, purchases on the store etc.). Finally games that support it can also post about specific events. All three options can be individually turned on/off, and if you select the purchase update option, each time you download/purchase something you'll be asked if you want to post information on this purchase on facebook.

It seems to work pretty well, though of course the functionality is still limited (especially when compared to the 360 version). They're saying this is just the start though, so we can probably expect more features in the future.

They also revamped the picture browsing to make more efficient use of the screen space. I don't think it looks great to be honest, but in terms of useability I think it's an improvement. I'm guessing this is done in preparation for facebook integration for pictures as well.

Finally you can customise the background color for your PSN name in the friendslist, and this is then used on your friend's friendslists as well, leaving the much complained about grey only for those who are off-line.

Decent update this week, and really strong update for the PSP. Especially curious about LittleBigPlanet

I saw a PJ Shooter icon on the US PS Store. Is it out already ? Had to run quickly, so I didn't drill down.

You don't have to activate it, actually - it should be on by default! Just select a folder with pictures (I have mine 'per month') and if you open it you'll no longer see just a long vertical line of pictures to scroll through, but a grid of photos about 5-6 wide times 4-5 high, that you can still scroll through (at fairly impressive speeds too).

Seeing it in the flesh, I actually like it a lot and think it is a big improvement.

I don't know how to activate the new photo browsing mode.

 I was changing my account icon. It has a photo browser selection screen. That one is still linear.

Went to XMB and check the photos there. It's a 2D grid alright. Yes, it does make the navigation faster and easier.

Vidzone is finally available in the Netherlands, woohoo! And it's really rather excellent. My wife is enjoying it now. It has loads more songs than I expected - a few hundred artists per letter of the alphabet, with some having just one song, but others just about all the clip hits they've ever had.
