I think the PS3 slot drive has to accept 8cm discs as well.
I see what you're saying. Personally I prefer slot-loading because my kid recently destroyed 2 tray-loading DVD players by pressing the "eject" button and then the tray (in downward direction).
As for the PS3 glow, *Argh* I'd rather they include something more useful. We can probably think of good use for it like. e.g., PS3 acting as a VoIP phone (where the glow will double up as a silent ringer, a la vibrate mode). The color can be different based on who's calling.
But I doubt the colored glow idea gets implemented on PS3 because it may not work well in white and silver ones, which seems to be coming next year.
EDIT: Blu-ray discs are hard-coated so scratching should not be an issue.
