PS3 vertical line problem

Well, if it's only an Uncharted affair, then more than likely it's a coding issue (aka bug) that manifests only in a setup similar to yours :)

If you can repro the same thing for KZ2, which does similar upscaling for 1080i TVs; then it may be hardware related.

I've been playing with it more and it doesn't happen every time, just very very frequently with Uncharted. I've seen it twice (for sure) with LBP but I can't get it to happen. With Uncharted if I keep loading and quitting, it will screw up 4 out of 5 times. Never happens with Killzone2.

Uncharted, LBP and Killzone2 are all running 1280x720 @ 60Hz.

Very weird. It must have something to do with the way the resolution switches from 1920x1080 at the xmb to the game resolution of 1280x720.

So it's an Uncharted bug ? ... since KZ2 doesn't exhibit the problem even though it could also perform 1080 scaling. It also doesn't affect all setups or we would have seen more posts on this problem.

I vaguely recall the 1080 scaling for Uncharted was only mentioned near release. So it might be a last minute item they added. I am not totally positive about this info though.

My monitor is reporting input timings of 1280x720 @ 60Hz for all three games. So it's scaling from 1280x720 to 1920x1200. The only one with a problem is Uncharted, and it isn't every time, just most of the time.

I see. I'll chalk it up as an Uncharted bug then. Something in your setup probably triggered it since I don't remember seeing the problem at home (I fooled around with Uncharted resolutions earlier on; or may be I missed some test cases).

When you get this problem starting Uncharted, does turning off the monitor and turning it back on fix the problem? Or does it always require a quit and restart of the game?

Is it normal for your TV to display the input signal (into the TV) as 60Hz when these games are being output at around 30Hz?

That's the refresh time of the display, 60 Hz. The games output whatever lower framerates as skipped or torn frames. There is no 720p30 standard for a display to switch to.

I know. That's why it would be weird for a TV to show 60Hz for the INPUT signal (what the TV is detecting...not displaying). That's only suppose to be the display signal in this case.

Of course, if his TV displays this no matter what, then no big deal.

But the input signal is 60 Hz! The display doesn't read what the input framerate is, only the input signal, which is the 720p60 standard. A 12 fps stop-frame animation would still count as a 60 Hz input, or maybe 24 Hz if the player, video and display support it.

To be honest, I don't even know if I tried that. I didn't try that yesterday.

What if you disable 720p output on your ps3?

I remember when GTA4 came out I was playing on a 1080i (not actual native res tv, it was old, it was some strange resolution) and had 720p support enabled on the ps3, the game played in 720p and would not upscale to 1080i.

If you turn of 720p perhaps the ps3 will upscale to 1080p for you and your monitor won't have to do anything as it is being provided it's native resolution.

It hadn't occured to me to turn the monitor on and off like Phat said to, but it actually fixed the problem. There must be some kind of handshaking issue. It doesn't always do it, but when it does, if I turn my monitor on and off, everything is good.

My LCD at work does something like this, on/off eliminates the issue. I always thought I had a bad DVI port on my Laptop/docking station.
