PS3 vertical line problem

I have my PS3 hooked up via HDMI. The display is 1920x1200. For some reason, if I have 1080p checked on my PS3, some of my games look really screwed up. The culprits are Little Big Planet and Uncharted. Little Big Planet only had this problem once or twice, but Uncharted does it every time.

For some reason there are vertical lines across the screen. They are perfectly straight, equal distance apart and they do not move. If I set my PS3 to 720p, everything works no problem. I guess it isn't much of a problem because I never watch BluRay, but I'm just curious to know if anyone has seen this before. My 360 used to work fine hooked up to the display at 1080p via HDMI and it's working fine hooked up through DVI-D. I'm assuming this is some kind of scaling problem.

Might want to post your TV model and any other equipment(s) in-between. The video settings may be a factor too.

Both Uncharted and LBP are 720p games so I don't know why you are associating the problem with 1080p.

Uncharted supports 1080i and uses it only when 720p is unavailable. The PS3 is not outputing 1080p in any case when playing this game. LBP only supports 720p so I don't see how changing that setting affects anything.

If those are the only 2 games you have, then only thing you will ever see at 1080p is the XMB. Maybe your TV has some kind of bug switching modes between 1080p and 720p.

Both LBP and Uncharted default to 720P unless 720P is unchecked. Did you force 1080P by unchecking 720P?

I get a single vertical line of random colored pixels on the far left on my TV, the 720P scaling is borked a bit.

Edit: Beaten by inefficient

I have a Dell 2408wfp display. The PS3 is hooked up directly via HDMI.

The reason I thought it had to do with the 1080p setting is the problem goes away when I disabled 1080p. I had 480p checked by default, and I had 720p and 1080p checked. When I uncheck 1080p the problem goes away. So, if the games default to 720p, I really have no idea what the problem would be. I'll have to mess with it again tonight. The problem was intermittent with LBP, but seemed to happen with Uncharted every time I had 1080p enabled. I didn't sit and do it a hundred times, so maybe it was all coincidental.

Might be your TV's scaling system.

But if I set it to 720p only, which is the games native res anyway, everything works fine, and my display is 1080p native. From what I'm reading here, even if I enable 1080p it shouldn't be used. Before I got my PS3 I had my 360 hooked up via HDMI and never had any problems. The 360 was set to 1080p.

I couldn't find anyone else describing this problem online. I saw some mention of the problem DrJay24 described.

Just curious. When you set the PS3 to use 720p exclusively, does your TV attempt to upscale it to 1080p at all ? Or does it render the 720p image as is ?

The native res on the display is 1920x1200 and I have it set to fill the screen while maintaining aspect ratio, so it has to be scaling the image.

Hm... probably something in the handshake ? Or cable/connection (less likely) ? For those 2 games, the PS3 won't upscale to 1080 when 720p is selected. So the source should still be 720p.

In your 360 example, your Xbox is set to do the upscaling to 1080p. Your TV simply displays the image.

But how is it the scalar if the games are running fine with the PS3 set to 720p? I don't get it. I'll mess around with it tonight.

If I get the issue again tonight I'll take a picture and try to find a place to host it.

I've been trying different google searches for the problem and haven't found anything that I think is the same thing.

Edit: I did find some descriptions that sound similar and they were all attributed to hdmi handshake issues

Yes, I did a quick search on your problem. It sounds like it could be a scenario peculiar to your set up. That's why I mentioned handshaking or even loose connection (or perhaps something incompatible/flakey with HDMI v1.3 when negotiating resolution for your equipments)

The U.S. version of Uncharted has a native 1080p mode to support 1080i/480p televisions. When running in this mode, tearing is much more severe. Also, your monitor will be scaling 1920x1080p to 1920x1200. Both can result in some major differences from the 720p setting, for sure.

Arwin, I thought the 1080i game scaling doesn't kick in unless the 720p selection is disabled ? If so, I think Scott_Adam hasn't ran this test case yet.

Hmm, yes, you may be right, definitely for Uncharted.

I just tested this again with Uncharted.

If I set my PS3 to enable 720p and 1080p, the game is defaulting to 720p. My monitor says the timings are 1280x720 @ 60Hz. The display is all screwed up though. Once the game starts loading I get those weird vertical lines. They affect on monitor's on screen display, and if I press the PS button to bring up the xmb, that is affected as well. If I quit the game, the xmb returns to normal.

If I set my PS3 to enable 720p and disable 1080p, the game is running at 720p and the timings are also 1280x720 @ 60Hz, but the display is completely normal.

I don't have any problems with 1080p being enable for BluRay movies, Killzone2 or Motostorm. I know I saw this problem once or twice with LBP, but it went away after quitting the game or rebooting my PS3. With Uncharted, it happens every single time, even though the game is running at 720p anyway.

I would think the handshaking inherent to the OS would mean I'd have this problem at a specific resolution all of the time, and not relative to each title.
