PS3 Nat?

I've been wondering about this one for a while. Is there a way to get PS3's NAT to not be type 3 without enabling UPnP (a suggested solution from google) and not enabling DMZ on the PS3's IP? I would enable UPnP, but I've heard that there are security risks involved and the same goes for DMZ.

DMZ sounds risky if tyhey ever find a way to hack PS3 I suppose.

But wasn't the UPNP exploti fixed ages ago in a patch? I dunno networking stuff. Maybe it's still risky.

I just know I have it turned on in y router and I've not been hacked so far at least and it's been like 2 years now if not mre.

I think if it was as bvad as some say I would have been fscked over by now by some russian or chinese wargames wannabe haxor but I haven't..
Peace.

Well, you need to forward ports used by the ps3 software. What I would do is to enable UPNP temporarily, See what ports ps3 opens. Then disable UPNP and open the needed ports manually. I guess that different games could/would use different ports so you might need to open new ports after buying new games.

Don't know if ps3 is "smart" enough to open ports only when needed(i.e. psp remote features). if so then you need to do more hunting to find out needed ports.

UPNP is risky as if some machine in your home network is compromised, virus/hacker/whatever can easily use upnp to open all ports. Opposite to if the router is behind secure password.

If your machine is compromised by scumware you're already screwed regardless of if you use UPNP or not.

So you might as well use UPNP and save yourself the hassle of faffing with opening ports manually which is just a pain in the arse. My router doesn't tell what ports it opens through UPNP anyway so it can't be figured out manually very easily.

Well that's my take on iut anyway.
Peace.

I too have upnp enabled, but I take the precaution to know that it can be dangerous. I periodically check my router settings to see if everything is ok. Same for wlan, to see that there isn't uninvited visitors. But the original question was how to have full network access from ps3 without enabling upnp. And there is solution, but it requires manually opening the needed ports.

fixed IP and router fowarding to these ports

Playstation Network Required Ports

TCP 80
TCP 443
TCP 5223
UDP 3478
UDP 3479
UDP 3658

DMZ works for me, PS3 is not your Windows based workstation, so that possibility of some hack is very low or equal zero (imo)

I'm using DMZ. Besides ports used by the PSN, you have to worry about different ports used by different games.

Is there some kind of security within a game? While a game is loaded into RAM, can some malicious code run?

Doesn't the Cell have security features?
