This site holds a database of PS2 and PS1 games, listing their BC status on PS3.

Mefisutoferesu at GAF has looked through the first 1000 or so games, and about 25+ games are listed as having issues, including:

DMC at title video screws up
Phantom Brave Characters missing/ title video screws up
Snagoku Musou 3 BGM
Valkyrie Profile BGM
SO3 Audio glitching
GT4 title demo screw up
VP2 playback screw ups
FFXI HDD support
OZ best save failure
Choas Field New Order temp screen glitches
Metal Slug 4 Screen glitches
Xenosaga 2 Movie freezing
Tekken 5 BGM issues
minna no golf 4 button lag
Nanobreaker freezing at movies
Code Age Commanders Save problems
Shikigami no shirou BGM
Super Robot Taisen Alpha Premium Audio
Ace Combat 5 Screen freeze at new game movie
Shin Sangoku musou 3 mega pack BGM
Shin Sangoku musou 3 best BGM
OZ save failure
Capcom Retro Games 4 BGM

He says there were a few other pachinko games that he didn't bother listing. Ratio of games with issues versus those that don't obviously looks good so far..it's nice they put up a database for this.

I wonder how game-breaking those issues are?

What does "title screen/video screw-up" really mean? Seems like theres lots of FMV glitches.

The ones that say "freezes" seem to be obvious game-breakers, but the rest might be more or less fine.

If the ~25 per 1k stays, then it seems it's about 97%, which sounds pretty good to me (especially if the problematic games are mostly just annoyances and not problems that stop you from actually playing through the game).

The errors aren't necessarily fatal, if that's what you mean. Here's some babelfish of the notes beside some games, as examples:

In the game, there are times when BGM is not played back normally.

With several scenes in the game, there are times when sound is not played back normally.

Title demonstration while playing back times when the picture stops there are.

So a lot of these may not be showstoppers..

Bah there are some good titles there I sure wouldnt want to experience issues with like DMC and Tekken5. I dont like this :???:

Doesn't Tekken5 not work at all with some versions of the PS2? I'm not surprised to see some issues with it at least.

I believe the Slim PS2s that Tekken 5 has trouble with relates to some part of the Tekken 5 game that uses the PS1 part of the slim PS2 (if you can understand what I'm saying). IIRC, the actual Tekken 5 game works fine, it's the included Tekken 1 (or whatever it was) that doesn't work -- maybe I'm mistaken though.

I think the issue was with the newest silver colored PS2 versions

That list of titles with issues looks almost the same as the one that went with the SCPH-75000 series PS2 (Silver, slimline, completely different IOP hardware that broke titles that violated TRC issues) - the HD supporting FF title being an exception, of course..

I'd guess that titles are at fault, not PS3 - and as the PS3 currently has EE+GS in it. And I'd be very surprised if the issues were something they could fix (or would want to spend valuable development time trying to patch around).

Yep seems to be your right. A 98.5% working rate seems great to me. DeanA do you know how long Sony's software emulation (making the PS2 games look better) will arrive?

Have they mentioned any graphics extras such as AA?
There's no extras as the games are running on PS2 hardware. It's been said that when the software emulation arrives, there may be extras, but the last we were hearing, it sounded like PS3 would just play the games in native quality.

There is a good thread on neogaf.
Lots of lists with the games that shows no BC problems. :)

Also FW 1.10 has some BC improvements:
- Playstation 1/2 software system renewed. For a list of modifications check the relevant site.

I think the real question is how good the software emulation will be. With EE and GS and even PS2 memory? it's pretty much given that almost all the games work. That being said I don't see them totally destroy these numbers in the future with the software emulation, it just has to work, or they won't implement it. Still it'll be interesting to follow how that plays out.

I am impressed to see so little games with problems that even a portion of them are still playable.
they have thousands of PS1 & PS2 games working just fine.
also, after they emulate the games and remove the PS2 chip inside the PS3, we will see the games being improved a bit. maybe by then, even these limited game exceptions will work fine.

in any case, I think Sony did a great job with B/C.

I would've thought that skilled coders with every bit of "secret" info on the system handed to them could quite easily make a fully working emulator for anything.

People that are guessing at things have managed to make a PS2 emulator so I would bet on the emulator being as compatible if not more so (as they will be able to code around whatever changed when they released the slim version) than the actual hardware solution.

I only hope they stuck to what they said at the beginning, all PS1 & PS2 games will be upscaled to 720p (when they release the emulator).

I think bgm glitches are'nt that big of a deal. it still would make a game playable.
as long as the game doesnt freez on you at least it s still bearable
