PS2 US/Europe HDD Details

Sony should have either lower the 99 or at least include a network adaptor in that 99.

Well if you're comparing it to Xbox's HDD, Xbox's is -also- 5400RPM.

But consider this: Xbox's HDD is 8-10GB, depending on the model.

PS2's HDD is 40GB.

Just humour me and check out the *retail* price of 40GB PC hard drives.

Well, for the last 5 or so years, at least based on my experience, ethernet cards have been more or less on every off-the-shelf purchased PC.
But many pople still have old machines, that need updating of graphics card, processor, memory... to run FF XI satisfactorily.
Analog 56Kbps modem might have been in pre-built PC's for 10 years, but are they really enough for playing FF XI online on PC?

Sure, 56Kbps modems are enough. It's an RPG for cripes' sake, and most of the combat is automated to boot. Hell, most PS2 players will probably be on dial-up.

I was just responding to people having "PC Network Adapter", not so much to people's systems. And beyond that, anyone with a system powerful enough to run FFXI acceptably will -definitely- have Internet. =P

...As opposed to the slowass 5400rpm HD in the XB?

Dude, it kinda annoys me that you never give Sony any credit whatsoever. Not only do both drives spin at the same speed, Sony's drive is 5x bigger too and hence most likely FASTER overall.

in all fairness the xbox's slow ass hardrive isn't 99$

60 gig 7200rpm 8 meg cache western digital is 60$ at best buy. Or a compusa 40gig hardrive 7200rpm 2 meg cache is 37$

in all fairness the xbox's slow ass hardrive isn't 99$

And in all other fairness MS is still losing money per Xbox sold(Can't compare price), the Xbox HDD is 8GB, and you can't buy it seperately.

In all fairness you can't buy XB harddrive separately, it's 4-5x smaller as well, and it also doesn't come WITH A FULL ONLINE GAME INSTALLED ON IT, so stfu about "fairness" please if you're not even going to bother to do a fair comparison to begin with.

Thank you!

yup exactly. 8)
Thats the reason why i made the 99USD and slowass 5400rpm comments. Sony should have decided to take a better loss in hardware to push such an addon.

Thank god MS is losing money(who the fo0k cares) and giving us consumers the best valued hardware deal. ;)

Indeed. With luck they'll keep losing for a good long time too, so we actually get value out of them! ;)

40 Gig HD $40
FF XI game $40 (a guess, I don't know how much games cost in U.S)
= 80$

Sony 40Gig HDD + FF XI = 99$

Doesn't sound so bad.
20$ more than if you'd be able to buy them from anywhere, but that's business.

5400rpm is perfect, doesn't heat up so fast, lasts longer and as long as it reachs 20-30MB/sec everything will be fine.

20-30MB/sec should be more than enough for main-mem<->HD streaming. There are many games that stream in-game content (textures, etc) from DVD (GTA, J&D, Getaway, etc.) ... seamless, it would be nice to see devs taking advantage of the HD to exploit streaming even further.

oo0ps! Dont forget that PS2 slowass 40GB 5400rpm HDD is coming next year. More price bang kill! :p

I wish the mods would lay some "more price bang kill!" on your silly fanboi head, Chap.

Still not understanding XB HD = slower-assier 8-10GB 5400rpm, hmm? Your display of double standards and undisguised fanboyism is sickening and disgusting.

So many of your posts are such sheer idiocy I'm amazed you're still around and able to post.

Your sheer idiocy surprises me too.. Xbox comes with a built in "free" HD. Cant complain about that. You have to fork out Xtra money to get a PS2 HD and for that price/effort, its not even a 7200rpm.

No but you don't pay for the hardrive. So the small slow ass hardrive in the xbox costs you nothing compared to 100$ hardrive from sony. Not only that but the hardrive was in it from launch. Its nice that its big but since right now there is only one game to play on it and its used for nothing else its wa to expensive. Its the same way I feel about the xbox live and the ps2 bba . Both should have been bundled in at no cost to you. Like the dreamcast modem.

Chaphack & Grall... you silly monkey boys need to stop with the name calling.. ;)

Chaphack, Hi. I'm new to this but some of your comments are very short.
Better described as random outbursts. Sorry, but it's true. :)
"Price bang kill!" doesn't support your posted comments or reflect current console pricing.

Grall, ignored any logic in the blurt,. and commented what was coherently written.
He did disrespect you so he's not innocent of ugly behavior.
So, without trying to understand arreal platter density & read speeds...Move on to this. -->

20-30MB/sec should be more than enough for main-memory<->HD streaming.
There are many games that stream in-game content (textures, etc) straight from DVD (GT3, GTA, J&D, Getaway, etc.) ... seamlessly. It would be nice to see developers taking advantage of the HD to exploit streaming even further.

Chyrz, sums up the point very well. His performance numbers may even be conservative.

The PS2 doesn’t offer much room for any type cooling. So a slower RPM drive is a good idea.
Second: 40GB HDD vs 4x DVD
w/2MB cache buffer, much higher transfer rate, & quicker access times would help a lot.

In fact I’m wondering just now if GT4 was postponed for this very reason?
If you want people online with an HDD, bought for their PS2…
Which would you rather have it for GT4 or FFXI (a game that will be on PC too) ??

By the way most of you never saw my post this.
“Watching GT4 in-game movies, in reverse I could easily spot the load times.â€￾

I think Sony should include both FFXI & GT4:HDD on the $100 dollar drive.
That would sell a lot better and make in-roads for the future, Yes?

The future ? In a year to a year and a half the future will be the ps3. This is an add on for a handfull of games like the gamecubes modem.

huh? *starts counting...... sept 2004...... march 2005......*

seems ok by me yeah.......

personally, so u know, i will NEVER EVER spend any money on a HDD for my PS2, unless i find 100 quid on the street... actually, if i did find 100 quid on the street, i still wouldnt spend it for a friggin HDD for PS2..... as good or bad or valuable as it is..... i've already spent so much on the thing (games, all the stuff i got to get true progressive scan etc...) the only thing i'm gonna get from now till ps3 is GAMES.

Look to me if another company has already added it into the box at launch and u release it 4 years after launch and charge 99$ for it there is no value.

The netlink on the saturn had value. The modem packed into the dreamcast had value . The hardrive in the xbox packed in at launch had value. The xbox live and the ps2 broad band adapter did not. Esp not when a system old than those two came with a modem so i cna play online games from day 1. Mabye if this was launched 2 or so years ago or right after the xbox launch i would consider buying it. And mabye if there were mor ethan 2 games on the way that need it. But as it stands there is no value . Just like the gamecube modem and bba . There is only one game that uses it . So its worthless. Unless u want that game. Then i guess for that person its worth it.

To be fair, 99 for HD + FFXI is not a bad price(knowing Sony, could be more), BUT neither is it one that will have eveyday gamer rushing for it. I know i wouldnt, until at least i see a network adaptor in that bundle.
