The 40GB HDD add-on will be released in the US next March, priced $99, complete with a pre-installed version of Square Enix's much wanted MMORPG, Final Fantasy XI. FFXI will also support cross-platform PS2/PC play.

A number of sneak-peek product demos will be included as well, along with the ability to save CDs to create a personal jukebox, file management, digital photo editing, and download content such as levels, missions, characters, and more. SOCOM II and Syphon Filter are tagged to take advantage of the latter in particular.

News concerning a European release should trickle through sometime early next year... if we're lucky.

Ah ha! I knew they'd never be able to release FF XI w/o the HD! It really makes the PC release look that much more attractive though.. ($49, AA, Aniso, high res, KEYBOARD)

Where does the Network Adaptor fits to the current plan? Non?
It has BUY FFXI PC written all over!
Is it just me, but I completely fail to understand what was the meaning of that post.
I can not make up any kind of counterblast to that, is it delibrately phrased so that it is impossible to reply to?
Or was the question just rhetorical??

The network adaptor plugs into the PS2, which then connects to the internet so one can play FF XI. Like, heh.

Still, I happen to see Chaps point.

FF XI for PS2:

$99 USD HDD (w/FF XI installed on it)
$39 USD NA
~$20 USD USB Keyboard

->~$160 total to play FF XI on the PS2

FF XI for PC:

$49 for FF XI

-> $49 total to play FF XI on the PC.

And really, from what I've gathered the game isn't really that good (at all) to begin with ;)

IMO MMORPGs are still best suited for PCs.

There's a slight disparity in zurich's comparison.

You should assume PC and PS2 start from equal ground.
Not everyone with PC has 'PC Network adapter'

Some people who are going to buy FFXI for PS2, already have the network adapter (and maybe even usb keyboard from their PC).

Not to mention all those PC owners who's hardware is not up to date to run FF XI.

Ok, a typical gamer's PC setup most likely already contains all necessary hardware to run FFXI, but at least you should detract the PS2 NA from the equation to make it that little much even ;)

I'm also not much looking forward to FF XI, there are better MMORPG's coming for consoles and PC (IMO).

PC FFXI looks AND runs better. ;)
A 1Ghz + 256mb + 64mb GF3 PC should outdo the PS2 version. Choices...if only they were so easy.

But is better graphics and framerate enough to compensate for otherwise mediocre game?
I'd guess you say ya :?

Yeah no kidding, the game is pretty brutal (the cute TaruTaru's are the only saving grace).

Either way, this thread is about Squenix's (arguably) bad business decisions, not a PC vs console pissing contest :p

What? Huh? Where?
This post is about the PS2 HDD.
What bad business decisions are you talking about? Squeenix not releasing a non-HDD FFXI? I'm almost certain they can't do that, with all the patches they need to release to balance the game, add content.... etc.

Well there are two sides to it.

One is that there isn't a non-FF XI PS2 HDD, which I suppose is a good business decision in that every person who gets the HDD will have FF XI, whether they like it or not.

The other is that one hopes Squenix isn't banking too much on the PS2 release of FF XI, as it does involve much more hoop-jumping (and money spending) than the PC release.

It would seem that SCEA is banking on FF XI being the 'killer app' to drive HDD sales, however I think many will be disappointed in the game (as others here have alluded to). IMO GT4 would have been a better vehicle for this.

Every PC for the last decade or so has shipped with some kind of analogue modem, at the very least. I feel sorry for anyone whose computer is actually physically *incapable* of accessing the Internet.

I think this HDD is a slowass 5400rpm..... :?
Sony should have either lower the 99 or at least include a network adaptor in that 99.

There isn't a non FF XI HDD because there are currently no other games that ´need the HDD, so there is no point in releasing just the HDD as there is zero market for it.

When GT4 releases, and if it benefits from the HDD, there will propably be a similar bundle, but I would except at the same time there'll also be plain HDD available.

Well, for the last 5 or so years, at least based on my experience, ethernet cards have been more or less on every off-the-shelf purchased PC.
But many pople still have old machines, that need updating of graphics card, processor, memory... to run FF XI satisfactorily.
Analog 56Kbps modem might have been in pre-built PC's for 10 years, but are they really enough for playing FF XI online on PC?

...As opposed to the slowass 5400rpm HD in the XB?

Dude, it kinda annoys me that you never give Sony any credit whatsoever. Not only do both drives spin at the same speed, Sony's drive is 5x bigger too and hence most likely FASTER overall.

*G*

Europe gets dissed once again...

No HDD confirmation until 2004...
No GameCube Price drop in Europe...

The only thing we get is FFX-2 in 2003, published by EA...

Your getting a price drop on all three consoles this next month.

As for the HDD... I don't know about that.
SCEE is the most impressive branch of SCE. (My opinion.)

When the word is really official (directly from Sony) then check.
