Grease the rails? Just open the PS2 and put some suitable lubicating grease on the metal rails the head moves along. YouTube has a million videos for fixing console problems. Also don't be afraid to open up your PS2 and play it with the case off. You may hear/see the problem in action. If the head makes noises while moving, it's likely a lubication issue. If it moves smoothly but takes a long time to load, maybe look at adjusting the head.

Been reading about it and you are correct. Apparently the strain is not caused on the laser by the chip, but by the use of recordable media. The variable quality of the media is the one that forces the strain on the laser, specially bad media, not by the chip itself.
