They both have the same Nvidia Geforce FX 5200+ and a Dell P991 (it's a 19" CRT Trinitron and about 5 or 6 years old)

I have had this problem for a while now, and it's getting much worse...

Here is a picture I took with a cell phone really fast last time it happened.

(In computer #1)
Before this happened only when I opened the color wheel in Photoshop 7. However after a while, not sure how long but probably a month or two at least, and it would happen every now and then when I was just on the internet or something. Through this whole thing all I had to do was restart and they went and stayed away.

(Now installed into computer #2)
Then probably at least a few weeks after that I would get a error that it said was being caused by graphic drivers and it would restart, this would only happen when I opened a game, I tried it on a lot of them, Splinter Cell, UT 2004, Farcry (demo), and Battlefield Vietnam to name a few. After trying all kinds of stuff I got it to work with the old drivers (they would be 2 generations old now, which ever that is now) for the card and they worked fine. I updated to the 70 series drivers (the ones out now) and for about a week or two it worked fine. However I just got the error:

STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER

I then came up with the idea that, maybe, it's not some random bug in the new computer and there some how related!!! So, I turn myself over to the MASSIVE amounts of knowledge here to tell me what’s wrong with my computer...

I smell a graphics card problem, but I'm hoping it's not. Any ideas? Becides getting a new card... ;)

I had that happen to my 9700 pro, bless her kind heart and may she rest in peace. :(

I got some really bad news for ya.... :?

...your card is shot.

I'm with DW. It most likely is a video card issue. Could be overheating... could be just a toasted card. On the upside 5200's IMHO are poop anyway. Sounds like a terribly convenient excuse to upgrade! ;)

See this tragedy as something positive instead and a good excuse to toss those horrible 5200s and stick in something a bit more up-to-date. Try ATi's X200 if you want to go super-low-budget; these can actually play all modern titles decently if you just keep the resolution down and maybe overclock the card a bit, particulary if you avoid the 64-bit version of the card.

A 9600 pro for $60 is a flat-out bargain and a hella terrific upgrade from a 5200!

Sorry about your card dude, I remember the way I felt when I posted up screenshots of my 9700 pro and everyone told me the bad news. :(

Let me tell you about the Saphire 9600XT referb I bought....last referb I'll ever buy. Paid $100.00 and it lasted 2 months. Never again.

Eeew! Where did you pick it up at?

I still gotta toss a Zalman 700cu on my X800 before I can put her back in my PC, I'm using a Gainward 6800 right now with that silly shroud taken off and a 120mm fan in its place instead.

Funny thing? With the 120mm fan it's not only cooler, but it's quieter and fits better.

I really want the X800 back though, I just can't get over the difference in AA 'tween the two. :?

Half a tick! Hey l15741, what brand of 5200 is it and when did you get it? The problem you're having should definately be covered by the warranty, why not return it for a new one?

Newegg....of course. Not their fault. You pays your money and takes your chances. I've pretty much won to this point. Of course, it's the first Vidcard I bought this way, rest have been cheap MB's.....

It's a PNY, and I think it was picked up at Fry's, because I do a lot of electronics shopping there. However it's a year and 4 months old, give or take. I'll look into that though, thanks, I think I even have the box  .

Also at first I was excited about the upgrade, then I remembered the whole I have to pay for it thing... But I'm very impressed with that ChiefValue site, anyone have experience with them? I just might have to order it today.

Well thanks everyone, it looks like the worst is confirmed, thanks for the fast and accurate replies. I suspected it before, but with the errors and so many people agreeing it looks like I'm going to have to believe it.

Thanks again

I would recommend a 9550 as well, it's the cheapest one you can get that runs everything smoothly. And great overclocking, as Matrox said.

Well, I've bought a few things from them.....I really thing they are somehow connected with NewEgg.....everything is the same, even the invioces & packing slips. BTW, PNY's have a "lifetime" warranty,. and the company is very good at taking care of problems like yours. Had a friend whose PNY GF4 4600 died a month ago and they replaced it with a FX5900.....not a bad deal!

As martrox said, PNY has a "lifetime of the product line" warranty, so call em up and ask for an RMA. All you'll be out is the $5 it'll cost to ship the card back to them.

I might get that 9550 still, but I would like to look into the warantee first. I looked on their site, but I don't have the original recipt, so I would like to talk to someone first. I can't find contact information on their site, and a google search came up only with a page on Nvidia's site, but the e-mail I sent to the support address got bounced back.

So it all comes down to anyone happen to have a method for contacting them?
