NV48 Cancelled

Default core speeds for NV45 appear to be 412MHz as it is. This is a fairly similar increase, % wise, as ATI did with the X850 XT PE (3% for NV40U to NV45U, 3.8% for R420 PE to R480 PE)

i know the nv40 has more headroom. dont know why nvidia is being so lazy.
the word lazy is not appropriate. You and i have no idea how hard it is to increase performance, while trying to make a profit and stay afloat.

You beat me to it. And besides, I think nVidia really wants to capitalise on SLI, they're dead serious about it. Since there is no reason to release a refresh part (like ATI did, which was as I understand a we-have-finally-good-yields release), they can concentrate on better promoting the 6xxx lineup and, of course, SLI.

just found at least 6 sites that list them as in stock, the highest having a quanitity of 67, within 35 seconds.

Look at who make these types of board: XFX, Gainward, BFG. They are not huge volume vendors, they are smaller volume, premium vendors targetting niche markets in through retail (with these high end boards at least). When your MSI's / ASUS's / LeadTek's of the world pick it up, then you have a volume product.

Since when did leadtek produce high volume retail cards? I think you need to change your scenerio to BFG/PNY/EVGA

Isn't LeadTek quite big in Europe and Asia? BFG and EVGA on the other hand are almost nonexistant here in Europe (AFAIK).

Over here in Asia, all I can find are MSI, Asus and Leadtek 6800GTs and 6800 Ultras. They are easily available, and you can just walk in a store, pay and walk out with an Ultra even. There is no chance of finding any BFG, Gainwards or XFXs here. And I know I badly wanted a BFG.

BFG have recently started in the UK with representation in PC World, although in the two stores that I frequent I've yet to see anything above a 5700 LE there. The online component center is likely to have better though.

But that is a point - the Taiwanese vendors, even the smaller ones, tend to have wider distribution capabilities than the North American vendors.

Yes. And I assume you were hankering after the BFG as it provides a default higher speed out of the box whereas the others don't?

I have a hard time believing this, for a few significant reasons:

1. PCI Express.
2. FP blending (pretty much broken on the NV40).
3. Video processor (again, pretty much broken on the NV40).
4. Every refresh part nVidia has released to date has sported efficiency improvements. Even without much clockspeed change, this could contribute to a significant performance improvement.

So, I just don't see any reason why the availability of SLI would make nVidia any less likely to want to release a refresh part. Hell, with the cutthroat competition in this market, they'd be pretty stupid not to release a refresh part (this is, of course, unless they feel that by not releasing one they can get their next-generation part out sooner...but they have such a great architcture with the NV4x that I don't see why they wouldn't want to maximize its potential).

You wouldn't think that Nvidia will be hedging it's bets solely on SLI, when ATI could be delivering a a similar solution to the marketplace early next year.

My guess is that Nvidia were waiting on hearing performance/shipping speeds of ATIs refresh. Seeing as the x850s aren't that much higher, they don't see a great need in releasing a new product.

So when are we going to see a new enthusiast product from nvidia? NV50, or the rumoured 24 pipe part? What's it's codename?

How many transitors would an nv4x based 24 pipe part eat up??!

Not to mention the volume of SLI-capable motherboards just isn't going to get that large.

Well, first of all, you can throw out what the Inquirer posts as nothing more than unsubstatiated rumor. So there's still a reasonable chance that we'll see the NV48 (or some other NV4x high-end part) before the NV50.
